JD 870
Hello, I am new to the forum. I need help and advices.
My JD 870 3 point hitch works fine, goes up and down in the first 5 to 10 minutes of using it. However, it will not lower after that. It will go up but it will not lower even if I jump on it. I checked the hydraulic fluid and its fine. I sprayed lubricant in the joints as stated in the other threads but nothing. It will work again for another 5 to 10 minutes if I let it sit and cool down. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

you should have a knob to adjust that between the seat and the floor, closer to the floor. I dont recall exactly, but i seem to recall you need to turn it clockwise.

Thank you for the response. I tried that but still nothing. The 3 point hitch only goes up after running the tractor for 5 to 10 minutes. It will go down when it cools down. The front loader works fine.

My 870 has about 1,200 hours on it. Never had that issue with the 3 point hitch. Of course I have a few hundred pounds of mower to 800 pounds of implements. That knob does indeed control the drop speed.

When you say the fluid is good, was that determined by oil analysis, or the level looks good? Not sure, but I do not think my hydraulic fluid gets hot unless I am mowing or chipping hard. It might warm up a wee bit but probably not hot unless I am really working the tractor. ;-)

What was the lubricant sprayed on the pivot points? I have never done that and my tractor has been sitting in the yard since 1996.

Hi. Thank you for replying. Sorry, the fluid level looks good. I drained the hydraulic fluid, cleaned the metal screener, changed the filter a few months ago but that didn’t help. I sprayed wd40 and synthetic lubricant on all of the joints and the lift arm joints as I had read on some of the posts I found on the internet but that didn’t help. Maybe bad or sticky stop valve, check valve, or relief valve? What could be preventing it from lowering? Thanks again for helping. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you saying you go out to brush cut with your 5 foot 600 pound brush cutter, raise the deck for some reason and it will not go back down?

No. Just standard tiller and mower. I have to raise the mower to go over the irrigation lines. It will not lower after 5 to 10 minutes into mowing or tilling the soil.
