JD 855 Steering

Having trouble with JD 855 Steering. Signifigant amount of play in the wheel.
Does JD have a kit or does the whole steering box need to be replaced. Any suggestions would be helpful. Tractor is 21 yrs old - used for mowing, snow plowing, general FEL work.

Do you mean play in the steering column itself? If so, there is a little plastic bushing right below where the steering wheel slides on that can be replaced.

The play may not be entirely in the steering box. Be sure to check the tie rod ends, and any steerling linkage as well. Not sure if the 855 has PS or not, but it sounds like it's all mechanical like the 750 I had.

If it has power steering (Hydrostatic steering to be exact) then there is no"steering box". We need that info to help more...

It is a hydrostatic trans with power steering. I checked the tie rod and cylinder and they are ok. I can turn the steering wheel almost a half turn before the tractor changes direction.

I was having the same problem. I have an 855 hydro and had play in the steering wheel. I found the problem yesterday. I checked the entire system and determined the play was between the steering wheel and the hydroulic steering valve. I looked in the parts manual,saw that the steering shaft had a tab that went into a plate inside the hydroulic valve. I figured one of the two was worn. Yesterday i took it apart and I was right. Fortunatly the shaft was worn not the plate in the hydroulic valve. It's about an $80. part but it's not easy to get apart. Remove the steering wheel, all wiring, dash panel, fuel tank and then you have to break into the valve. About 2-3 hrs. The valve is tricky so mark everything before disasembly. The tab on the shaft should be rectangular, mine was diamond shaped. Have fun.
