I've come across a JD 830 3-cylinder diesel that I'm considering purchasing. I know that these tractors were made in the early 70's, possibly 73-75 I think?

Anyway, does anybody have any experience with these tractors or know what to look for as far as problem issues to look out for when purchasing one?

Any and all info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Brian

Lets see.. looks like 74-75, 3 cyl, 35 pto hp.. 151.9ci.. Live pto.. weighed in at just under 4k#... And had 8/4 f/r gearing.

Came with yummy 16.9x30 rears.. but those go for a mint... nowadays.. ( 7.5x16 fronts.. )

I don't own one.. so can't give you more than what's printed in my reference book.

Almost certain they were built at Mannheim. The only Deeres that I recall having any widespread reliabilty issues are the 1010 and 2010.

I've been running a 830 JD on my little pumpkin farm for the last six or seven years. Have done some repairs, but nothing too big. I find it to be an EXCELLENT tractor for my use. Good size, plenty of HP and good weight. Stable as it sits low, moves all the snow we get, mowed four acres of grass a week for several years, works up my 8 acre pumpking field. Pulls 2-14's fully mounted with no real fuss in our light soil. Easy to get parts for (any JD dealer) works good.

Drop me a line with specific questions if you have any....

I agree with the other posts on this question. The 1010 and 2010 are the JD's to really stay away from. Being the German built of this series some of the parts cost a little more, like Bosch alternators and the like. Your local JD dealer can get everything you need and probably has most of it in stock if they are an Ag dealer. Those are a really nice size tractor and they hold their value. Sort of like the Ford utilities, but a little newer. I would look at all the usual stuff. Oil leaks, 3 point work properly, clutch and brakes feel good. Make sure the diesel starts good and does not smoke too bad. Tearing into a diesel can get expensive. Also, if you are in a cold climate, the older diesels do not start as well as the modern tractors. If you need any manuals you can get them directly from John Deere (800)522-7448. The manuals are cheaper on CD than the printed version. You can also find a lot of good info about these tractors at www.tractorshed.com.

Good luck,
Russ

J.D. 3 cyl 830 has me scratching my head. I was under the
impression that the 830 tractor was a horizontal 2 cyl ???
One of my neighbors in Illinois had a JD 830, it was a big boy
in it's day. One of the things I most remember about the
tractor was it would oscillate back an fort when it was at slow
idle...

Richard, I don't know why Deere did that. There also was a three-cylinder model 820 tractor that pre-dated the three-cylinder 830. Confusing. I wonder how many times guys at the parts counter ordered parts for the wrong tractor?

Deere imported the three-cylinder 830 utility tractors from their factory in Germany during the mid-70's. It was kind of a smaller, lighter version of the 2040 which followed a year or so later. The three-cylinder 830s were less than 1/2 of the weight of the two-cylinder brother of the same name.

Yes, like you said Richard, the tires on the two-cylinder 830s would flex up and down, or back and forth when they were idling while parked. You knew that there was a lot of iron spinning around inside those tractors!

The 830s made strange bed fellows. The 2 cyl. 830 was one of the
biggest tractor made by Deere and the 3 cyl was the smallest in their
time period...

I had forgotten about that strange little tractor. Strange because
didn't have a grill in front, the opening were on the side.

The older I get, the more I seem to forget, thanks for the reminder..
