JD 755 20 horse deisel
Greetings, my first post.... I have a JD 755, 20 horse deisel that is blowing black smoke when it is working (cutting heavy grass, or plowing snow). It also doesn't seem to have much power as a result, certainly not as much as last winter. I can do basic tune-ups, but just wondering what to look for beyond the basics?

Welcome to TBN:D

Black smoke is usually to much fuel, sounds like your injection pump is not up to snuff or has lost time. This is not generally a DIY type fix, it take a good diesel repair shop to get it right. You might want to call your local dealer and see who they use to do work for them...

How may hours on your engine? Sorry I didn't have better news for you.

Black smoke is usually indicative of not enough air. First things I would do is change primary and secondary air cleaners and the fuel filter. Then add some injector cleaner to the fuel. See if that helps. I've also had fuel from certain suppliers that seems to smoke more than others.

Sincerely, Dirt

Thanks, and no apology necessary kennyd, I plan to seek professional help (for the tractor :) just looking for a general direction. It has 1000 hours on it, and while it was serviced by the shopping centre that owned it, I have no idea how detailed they got. it may have had nothing but oil and filter for the last 10 years...
Thanks also Dirt, those things I can handle, so I'll try them first. I have a deisel mechanic buddy, so I'll promise him beer and at least have him check the fuel injection.
Cheers,

1000 hours is nothing for these little Yanmar engines so I hope it nothing serious! Definitely check those filters like Dirt suggested...

OMG!!!! I have at least twice the tractor now.... When I first bought the tractor last year, it came with a pail of parts, including an air filter that was too big for the housing. I had meant to get the proper filter, but frankly I completely forgot about it. After reading your posts I went home last night and cleaned the air filter with compressed air. The amount of dust and soot that came out of that thing was embarrasing. I then plowed the driveway (all 1500 feet of it) with a tractor that I was not familiar with. The power it has is amazing, so it's obviously been sadly neglected, including by me frankly. So... lesson learned, I'll get a new filter, injection cleaner, etc and a service manual today and have it purring like a kitten. I suspect this thing has had nothing but oil and filter for ten years. Just thought I'd let you know, thanks for your advice.

Be sure and get BOTH the primary and secondary air filters. DEFINATELY change the fuel filter.

You originally thought it was a serious problem. Always try the simplest solution.

Glad your tractor is running better.

Glad it was simple and my online diagnosis was so wrong!

If air filter was that bad; I would definately change all filters, etc as it probably was neglected. It may be wise to take it to dealer and have a 1000 hr service performed which would include changing ALL fluids, filters, have them check injectors, etc. Dealer will know what needs checked. This machine may have been left sitting idling alot and it is carboned up. fuel conditioner that is made to remove carbon would be recommended.

It is amazing what a dirty air filter will do to an engine. Several years ago I bought a John Deere 300 from a guy who told me that the engine was bad and it had sit for 2 years. It looked real bad all faded from sitting outside, one tire was rotted out, my wife was real pleased when I came rolling in the drive with it. I all ready had a 316 which was a newer version of it. I put the charger on it and I wanted to hear it run it turned over ok but would not start so I took the air cleaner off and I found out why it would not run, the air filter was plugged. I went and got one out of the trash from my mower and the tractor ran smooth. A little buffing, a new tire, new oil and filters, and a battery it was good as new. I gave $300 for it and sold it for $1500.
