Planters jd 70 and 71 planter differnces

I bought a john deere planter and I cannot find the tag anywhere. What is the differences between a model 70 and a model 71?

The mounting hardware to attach to the toolbar, the downpressure adjusting hardware, and drive gearing are different. 70's are less adjustable and more proned to "bouncing" on rough ground.

if you wanted to make sure you were NOT getting a 70, what one thing would you look at? (and not talking about the numbers on teh side, I don't trust stickers folks put on them)

Do they look like the row units in this picture? Thes are #71's. I don't know how to describe the differences, but #70's have a very different look. A LOT LESS parts in the down pressure adjustment towards the front of the unit. (a lot less adjustability there)

The housing for the chain that drives the unit is different.

Keep in mind that #71's were available in 2 configurations. One used a 4"x4" toolbar mounting, and then there was a 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" "diamond" toolbar mount. That has nothing to do with distinguishing the difference.

I zoomed up your picture, too blurry to tell. These are 70s. One other way to tell is take the cover off the gear box. A 70 adjusts for tension by loosening the wheel mounting bolts (3 bolts surrounding the drive sprocket towards the back of the housing) and sliding to take up the slack. A 71 has a spring loaded idler, IIRC.

Well I had a four unit that was sold to me as a 71, but the main castings that held the seed tube were different. Two were squarish shaped and two were rounder and it made it difficult to get seed tube for. bjr
