ok, just bought my 2520,

am I just stupid(ok don't answer that), or is there a flaw in the front wheels of the 62D mower deck??!?!?

I've only logged about 10 hours on the thing, and cut my grass twice, but I cannot get the front wheels on the mower to stop tearing up my yard, especially when changing directions...

i've set them high, set them low... what gives??? any help would be appriciated... seems they turn sideways, then scrape the **** out of the yard before getting situated for forward mowing...

thanks...

otherwise... LOVE the 2520 for my 5 acres of cutting...

It's my understanding that the wheels are not to touch the ground under normal circumstances.

- set the height adjustment to your preferred height and lower the deck.
- adjust the wheels so they are off of the ground.
- bottom of wheel should be below the bottom of the deck.

Good Luck!

is it a brand new deck?

sounds like they need greese.

I thought they were supposed to ride on the ground and act as the deck stabizers at the edges to ensure a nice even cut.

DITTO. I have about 40hrs on my 2520 so far. I have the "anti-scalp" wheels set high so they only touch to prevent the deck from tearing up our grass.Only problem is the "anti-scalp" wheels do all the scalping???Go figure . I have tried lots of grease but nothing seems to help. Just a poor design . I am sure JD is aware of this and we will see if they correct the problem for future owners. Also the independant lift sucks and is far from independant. The hydraulic hook ups are in an awful place too I liked them on my 4010 better ware they were out of the way. Other than that I love the 2520.

cheers!

I think you have your wheels set too low. They are NOT supposed to carry the deck, only be set low enough to prevent scalping. Actually they should be set high enough that if they fail to turn properly they wouldn't even leave a mark in the grass. My Son has an old JD420 which has swivel caster wheels at the front corners of the deck. They aren't even rounded wheels, they just look like tall skinny push mower wheels. They don't tear up his lawn at all. Actually when he's going fast on rough lawn, the swivel wheels are just swinging back and forth and only occassionally touching the ground at which time they swivel back straight.

I've got mine set just above the ground when the deck is where I want (took a while to get it levelled correctly) and have made a habit of squirting in some penetrating lube (wd-40 whatever) every time I mow. If you move the wheels back and forth you can get some in the shaft area and it seems to help--also have noticed they don't tear up the lawn as much when it's dry.

I took some advise and oiled the heck out of the front wheels on the deck, works like a charm now... no more tears in the yard... thanks for all your help.. (I think JD should have had a grease fitting on these wheels)

Having same problem with mine and my wheel on back left just broke off. Any idea where I can get a replacement on line?

duppa43,

If you do a search on the JD Owning and Operating section of this site, you'll find pages written on this situation. JD has changed the design of the wheels to help alleviate this problem. The newer style wheels have a more rounded profile.

You might want to check to see if yours are the new style or old style. I mow with my deck as high as it will go, so may not have the same experience you do, however, I have not had a problem with the wheels digging in. Here is what the new style wheels look like.
