I bought a 2000 JD 5510 with 541 loader with about 5000 hours on it. Mostly it's been great, but it leaves random puddles of hydraulic fluid on the shop floor and at least one of the bucket pistons (I think the right one) leaks down. Over the winter here I plan to change the hydraulic fluid, filter and clean the screen. While I'm at it, I hope to identify and repair any leaks I can find.

I do have some oil coming from around the PTO in the back, and thought that might be one I need to address while the fluid is out. I have already replaced one power steering hose that had cracks in it and my leaking seems much, much less, but I imagine I will find others. I also have some minor dripping around the rear hydraulic connections.

I would appreciate any insight into that PTO leak, and then any ideas of common issues others have run into with this model.

Sorry that's pretty vague, but I wanted to start gathering info before I started tearing things apart.

Much Thanks,

Todd

Thanks. The one thing I do seem to be finding lots of info on is the bucket piston. That seems pretty straightforward. That thread was helpful so I know to get both kits and the tool it needs.

I've been trying to avoid springing for a manual, but I think that might be the way to go. They're just not cheap.

I have puddles under the very rear of the engine at the firewall, dead center seeming to come from the right side under the cab floor, and the rear left. Just not easy to get in and find the sources. Has anyone had similar leaks?

Well I was wrong about the manuals. The downloadable version at selectmanuals.com was $35 and is an enormous help. Thank you JD5210.
