I have seen this subject posted numerous times but there is never a definitive response. I am getting ready to repair the hydraulic wet brakes on my JD 5310. The brakes are locked up. There was water in the fluid which I know has ruined the brake pads. However, there is a ton of talk about the brake retractor springs being poorly designed and failing. I have experienced problems with the brakes locking long before water got in the tractor due to a torn shifter boot. Some people talk about leaving the retractors out after the repair and discarding them. Most agree the original retractors were defective due to springs which become prematurely weak and defective causing the brakes to lock.
Does anyone know if they have come out with new and improved retractors? Has anyone done the repair and just left the retractors out of the repair? If so, how did they brakes function without the retractors? I am in the middle of the repair and I have to decide whether to replace the retractors or eliminate them from the repair. Since the retractors are deep within the axle housing, I don't want to have to go back in and do the repair again. Thanks.
