JD 5300 Brake springs??? Help??

I've got the left side brake apart on my 5300. The friction material on the disc was gone on one side and almost gone on the other. One of the compression springs was broke, which leads to my question for posting. I've been told by a "john Deere mechanic" to leave the springs out, that they can break or hang and cause problems. Does any one have any thoughts or experience with leaving the springs out or advise against it??

I don't remember JD utility tractors having a brake dragging problem until JD engineers decided to add the 3 springs on each side.

TX Jim - are you suggestion to NOT install the a compression spring/retractor spring?

Actually I don't have a clue whether to remove springs or not. I checked the axle brake piston and they are different part numbers than the older utility models. Trial & error would be my only guess if JD dealer service dept won't testify

Tx Jim, thanks for the response. If I remember correctly, you also helped me start diagnosing my troubles, thanks for that help as well. The local JD dealer doesnt show to have any of the springs listed in the parts diagram on hand. I'm gonna talk to their service dept tomorrow and see what I can find out.

Quick update, I replaced the brake disc on the left side, removed the spring assemblies, pulled the right side apart, the disc measurement was as thick as the new one, but it appeared the springs were actually holding it apart, so I removed those as well. Put it all back together after some much needed cleaning. The brakes work great. I get maybe 3/4 inch of movement in the pedals before it tries to throw me over the steering wheel. Thanks to all that helped out.
