John Deere 5220
my 5220 is stumping me and a few other friends. running great, pulled into shed, would not start next morning. turning over, just not starting. followed great thread about JD 5x20 troubleshooting for non starters. replaced fuel filter, bleed lines, checked fuses, all good . fuel is running strong from the manual pump to injector pump. not coming out injector pump bleeder screw very strong. opened 2 of 3 injector lines as well, and no fuel coming out with manual fuel pump pressure applied. solenoid is clicking when i apply power from battery to positive lead. not clicking when i turn key, but can feel movement on solenoid when i have my hand on it and turn key. my 5220 does not have cold start option, so buying switch was pointless (looked for a while!). my JD dealer does not do benchwork so taking injector pump off and letting them work on it is not an option. seems like fuel shut off switch is problem at solenoid, but do not know. any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Are you blowing any fuses? And does the fuse blow as soon as you turn the key?

If yes, to both questions, I believe the problem is the thermistor sensor (thermistors are temperature variable resistors used as sensors.). On the thermostat housing there is a sensor that is connected to a two wire harness that goes to the injection pump; this is the "cold start advance" portion of the system so it starts easier when cold by advancing the timing.

This is the fuse for the fuel pump solenoid as well.

When the sensor on the thermostat housing fails it shorts out and blows the fuse. Try unplugging it, replace fuse and see if it starts and runs. The part # is RE503242, if you are quick changing it, you don't have to drain the coolant, just make sure it's not hot at the time. You will want a pan under the tractor to catch the coolant, so as not too have to clean it up.

To comply with the exhaust emissions regulation, the timing of injection pump should be around 6 to 9 degrees before TDC. These timing values do not allow proper start-up operations when engine is cold. To ease engine start-up, a cold advance system gives to the injection pump a temporary over-timing.

When coolant temperature is below 50 C (122 F), the solenoid valve is activated and opens the cold advance circuit.

not blowing any fuses. have checked them with meter as well. replaced as well just to be sure. are you saying all 5220痴 have cold start option?

My 5210 does and I am guessing your 5220 does as well, but it might not. With the heat we are having that is not an issue.

While it is for the 5X10. Here is a starting system diagram that may help, since you get power to the solenoid, when you get it from the battery and not when you turn the key.

This is from the 5210 operators manual:
Tractors are equipped with an intake air heater system. An electric heating element (A) warms the intake air.

1. Activate the intake air heater system by turning key (B) to the RUN position. Hold the key in for 10 or 15 seconds for temperatures above -18ーC (0ーF). Hold key in for 30 seconds when ambient temperature is below 0ーC (32ーF).

2. Depress clutch pedal and turn key switch clockwise (C) to start engine.

3. If engine runs rough, activate the intake air heater system by holding in on the key switch (B) until engine runs smooth.

WHAT kind/type of inj. pump are u talking about.??
A CAV/Delphi.?? or
Stanadyne/ RoosaMaster.. They DONT have bleeder screws.. Try removing the check ball connector on the top cover & try starting it.. & let the fuel flow out.
Just hot wire the sol. straight off the battery to diagnose.
