Was looking at a 5105 recently and noticed that the rear axles had been extended away from the housing, about three inches each, and was taken aback at first. The owner said they did this for "some" gardening they did...must have been a big garden...but of course now the front and back tires are in line with each other.... I am going to call one of the many JD dealerships i have around me and see what they have to say (flip a coin)...but does anyone know how burdensome it would be to put the tractor back the way it "should"...do you have to split the tractor...if so, durn that is a lot of trouble to keep the tires out of the peas...just wondering as otherwise i am interested in buying it... and does anyone see this very much these days...

Not sure what you mean exactly. Do you mean they spaced it with a bolt-on spacer? Can you post a photo?

Sounds like spacers to me as well, they should be bolted between the hub and the wheel, no problem to remove.

No spacers. the axle is literally 3inches further out from the housing on both side. Sorry no pics - tractor is about 2 hrs away - but if you can imagine just taking the axle and "moving" it outward...that is apparently what they did....or they had slightly longer axles installed (doubtful)...but there is nothing over the axle...i even ran my had over the axle and you could feel the "ridge" where it felt like it should have been up against the tractor...(about 3 inches away)....like I said....I hadn't seen this type of "set-up" before....
(this was all noticeable b/c of the tires looking like they were in line with each other and the rear tires seemed to stick out further than they should have...that was when the owner mentioned the axle deal...

No clue then, I have never heard of a setup like that:confused: The owner couldn't give you better detials of that modification?

I cannot imagine someone going through the trouble to install longer axle shafts when they could simply space the wheels to get the combination they wanted.
You could go to the Deere website and look up that tractor from a parts standpoint. Go to the exploded parts and you can see what normal looks like.
Under "build one now" or something like that you could see if axles like that might be an option. This is all I can think of.

Talked to JD dealership that may have sold the tractor to the fellow (you know how they are - one company has more than one location)..service guy said that JD does not make a "different" axle for the 5105...so apparently the owner really didn't know what he was talking about...he led me down the wrong path and I bit hook line and sinker...more than likely they only adjusted the front end because I still do not recall any spacers on the back tires...oh well...deep subjects for shallows minds...thanks for the input fellows
