I have been thinking about buying a 48 backhoe for my JD 4300. What is a good price for one NEW and USED? I have the power beyond on the tractor already. Who makes the John Deere backhoes? Bush Hog look to be the same thing. How are their prices NEW and USED? I have heard that one maker offers a float option.

I had a 48 on a 4600 three years ago, 460FEL. As I recall it added about $3600.00 to the price in a package deal. I don't have that unit anymore. I don't know what a used one would go for. I can tell you that it dug fine for me. The only reason I don't have it anymore is a guy made me an offer on the hoe, trailer and dump truck. One I could not refuse. I replaced it with a 110TLB.

Does the 110 hoe completely blow the 48 hoe by in performance? It looks like it does. What kind of work did you use your 48 backhoe for?

I have not used a 48 personally but my 110 has ton's of power and speed. The tractor was designed for the hoe not the other way around. You have quite a bit more flow and power and size. I am continually amazed at the power that this little hoe has. You can pick up 40' log and literally throw them around and the tractor stays put. By the time you out fit a green tractor up with the hoe you are knocking on the cost of the 110. Besides you get a lot beefier tractor and a more rigid frame. My .02 cents

I must say that the 110 hoe is a much "beefier" unit. Just the difference in control operations is impressive. To date I have only used it for three small trenches for power and water. I expect some footer work this season. I have even used it for tear-out of some overgrown juniper for a customer. Definitley overkill, but it was fun. As I write this the big boss (wife) informs me I am putting in a drain pipe for a neighbor!!!

What I really like is the loader control joystick operation. Right now I have a 72 HD bucket with a custom toothbar for over the double edge. works great. I think I will look for a multi-purpose bucket also. Never had one, just wondering if I can justify the expense.

It's nice to have the aux. ports there in case I need them.

Obviously, I misread your post. I used the 48 hoe for a bunch of little stuff; trenches, burying things, stump dig outs and drain pipes. I liked using it, just couldn't refuse the purchase offer and thought I would enjoy working the 110TLB. It was interesting learning how to use a hoe. Needless to say I "dug" a lot of holes and "ditches" on my own property in the process.

Prior to the 48 hoe I had a 4475 with a pro-850 hoe attachment. That did OK, but I wanted the flexibility of a hoe and loader at the same time. That's actually what I learned on. I'm still learning, but slowly getting better with it.

As a brand new 48 owner, who has spent several hours on it in just a few days I can tell you that it is a very impressive unit. I am using it on a 4410, so we're not talking about a huge difference in power supplied to the hoe. Personally I think you will love it. I know I sure do.

What is most impressive is attaching and detaching the hoe from the tractor. It is just about the easiest implement to work with that I have ever seen. I can do it in about 3 minutes by myself with no tools and not a single grunt. For this reason, I wouldn't even think about looking at any other brand...this is JD designed to work with JD. Maybe someone else has something as good, but in browsing some of the other forums, I don't think so. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif It takes longer to take the three point hitch arms off than it does to put the hoe on.

I have been doing some trenches around our place. First burying a line for a security system out to the barn. Then I extended all of our downspouts around the house out 35 feet, with perforated ADS pipe. And, today I did some foundation work for an addition to my barn. In all of those projects, I have encountered several coffee table sized rocks at depths up to 24 inches. The 4410/48 has been up to the task in every case -- absolutely amazing.
