OK, bare with me, this might be a stupid question but I'm new to this and want to be 100% sure.

I have a 4710. A fitting came loose under the tractor and started squirting fluid when the steering wheel was turned. I quickly tightened up the fitting and checked the steering, it seemed to work just fine. But when I went to raise my bucket, it would not lift! Is the hydraulic fluid and power steering fluid the same thing, are they all just connected to the hydraulic system?

If so, where does the fluid go? I found 2 places to put oil in, 1 on top of the motor and the other on the right side (sitting on tractor). I didn't replace the fluid, mainly because I didn't have any but even if I did, I didn't know where it went!

Thanks a lot,
Mitch

Welcome!
The oil you need to be concerned with now is your hydraulic oil. That is what powers your transmission, loader, and power steering. If you lost some hydraulic oil, then you're loader may not work properly. To check your hyrdaulic oil:

Checking Transmission Oil Level
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Allow oil one hour to settle before checking level to ensure accurate dipstick reading. Check oil level after several hours of operation.

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.) Allow machine to cool down for at least one hour.

2. Remove dipstick (A) located behind operator's seat. Wipe dipstick with a clean rag.

3. Install dipstick.

MX4777

4. Remove dipstick and check oil level. Oil level should be between the minimum (B) and maximum (C) lines.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Help prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering the transmission. Clean area around fill cap before removing.

Do not overfill transmission. Oil expands during operation and could overflow.

5. If oil level is low:

· Remove oil fill cap (D). Add John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARD (JDM J20D) or equivalent oil at fill cap location.

6. Install and tighten fill cap.

Those instructions should be right out of your owner's manual,, which you should have. If you have done this, and the oil level is ok, maybe a call to your service dept will be needed. It's very possible you just leaked out enough fluid that the hydraulics don't have enough to run the loader.

Here's the link to the online owner's manual, the pictures didn't come thru on my post:

Let us know,
good luck

Yes, they are the same! There is one resevour they both draw from. Your owners manual will show where to fill it, and how to find the right amount. On my 4310 the fill cap is behind the seat. The level indicator is a glass sight beside the rear pto shaft. Basicly, the loader is lowered with the bucket level, and the whole rig on a level spot, the fluid should fill the sight glass halfway.

Thanks for the info. That's what I needed to know. I read through the owner's manual but I kept looking for something referring to power steering, I couldn't find it! The fitting must have just rattled loose.

I didn't fill anything, I didn't know where to put it. It tried calling the JD dealership but they were closed so I my second thought was to come here, I knew I could get the answers I needed.

So filling the transmission takes care of the hydraulic system and power steering?

Thanks a lot, you've been a big help! I'm learning as I go. I spend most of my time playing/working on the tractor, I guess I need to spend a little time getting to know it!

Thanks again,
Mitch

I've noticed a problem that I think is related to my original post.

My front end loader is really jerkie when I lift it. Sometimes it doesn't even want to move. The hydraulic oil is inside the operating range, do I need to bleed the system somehow? I bought the recommended oil from the JD Dealership. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mitch
