I am having starting problems with my JD 4700 Compact. Here are the symptoms:

1) Engine turns over fine
2) Plenty of fuel
3) All filters/strainers are clean
4) Never fires

I have had the dealer come over and pick up the tractor and when they got it to the shop, they claimed they a diode was gone (which they replaced), and it worked fine. They dropped it off, it started, we ran it for 4-5 hours doing field work, shut it down, and the next morning it didn't start.

The dealer picked it up again, and this time claims that there was a corroded connection, replaced it, and was able to start it, letting it run for 2 hours, and returned it to me. I ran it for a couple of hours harrowing our rings, and a few hours later, it didn't start again.

The dealer can't figure it out and has charged me for 8 hours labour! Moreover, they broke my fuel gauge and claimed it was broken before (I'll talk about that in my next post).

Anyhow, I think there is an electrical problem that is somehow uncovered once the tractor is put to work for a few hours (or perhaps on bumpy fields). I've given up on this dealer and will use another one in the area.

Do you have any suggestions to help diagnose this problem?

Thanks

This is a tuff one. The dealer is more than likely running into something that doesn't fail while in his presence. This makes it really tough to fix. I would tell him of my concerns that he has not been able to fix it. But I am not sure you can totally blame it on the dealer.

Also posting this in the John Deere forum might get you better answers.

RedLeaf,
Here is a link to a thread that might help you Thermistor/starting problem on John Deeres
Sorry about your fuel gage....the next time if ever again before my tractor goes back to the local JD service department we are going to verify all of my lights and electronics work...I had a similar experience with my JD...the lights worked fine before the tractor went to the shop and JD dealer split my tractor and when I got it back the lights were not working ,the 1st thing they say is "they were not working when we got the tractor" /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Yup, the problem was with the thermistor -- it costed about CDN 5.00 and took 5 minutes to replace. Tractor starts fine. Thanks!
