Hey All,

I'm out of town and looking to pick up a JD 4400. My best option for getting it back home is a U-Haul Auto Transport. Will it fit?

I won't be in front of the 4400 again until I pick it up.

Attached is a pick of the auto transport. If you can't read the dimensions, they are 76, 58, 41, 36, 144 and 36. The tongue extends another 36" for a total of 72" from trailer frame to center of the ball coupler.

The next pick shows the 4400. It has turf tires that I believe are in the narrow position. I can't find a good enough listing of the tractor specs and don't know if width is a problem (i.e. will the tractor sit on the rails?) and don't know if length is a problem. If the tractor fits the width of the rails, would it be better to drive on or back on?

Thanks,

Joe

A 4400 is almost 10ft long without the loader, sounds a little tight to me. You may or may not fit but could measure the length with the bucket tucked in close to the wheels. I prefer longer trailers to allow balancing the load over the trailer axles. Another thing you might need would be some lumber to raise the tires over the inside rails on the trailer pictured. You need to know what the tractor with all the wheel weights and loader weigh too.

I would certainly prefer a 14' trailer for moving this tractor.

Tractordata doesn't list the width, but it says the 4400 is 2900 lbs. Add about 1000lbs for the loader, and some extra for the wheel weights and maybe loaded tires too, to be on the safe side. Check to see that the U-Haul trailer is rated for that, probably is but make sure.

That trailer is pretty low to the ground, I would think you will be just fine driving it on forward, but it will probably do just as well in reverse too. Most likely it will fit, but if the one you are picking up has the wheelweights on the rear, they could possibly be too wide for the fenders if you back it on. Really though, after thinking about it some more you might not be able to get a good balance with a short trailer. It would s*ck to get there and find out you couldn't load it properly for safe trailering.

Good luck with the haul, be sure to check the lug nuts, air pressures, chain binders, and the hitch every so often but I'm sure you know about that.

I tried to rent a uhaul tailor to tow a tractor home and they would not rent it for the purpose of hauling a tractor. Might want to check before you make the trip.

I doubt it. Those UHaul trailers are intended for small cars. They wheel width is limited.

I think your fine for fitting the wheels on the trailer tracks. The minimum inside tire width shown on a 3000 Twenty series tractor is 40 inches and you wont exceed the max on those dimensions you show for the trailer. (I beleive the 3000 series replaced the 4400 series...right?

I gotta believe those auto trailers are rated for at least 7000 lbs.

If so.....the only concern I think is for the length.....and I'm gonna wager you get it to fit.....if you want to. You may need to put the bucket lip on the trailer's A-Frame?....or haul it backwards.

Hey foggy, sell me the tool box rack off of your 790 before you let it go with the tractor!!!

The 430 loaders came with either a 61" or 73" bucket but it looks like you have a 4 in 1. Do you recal the distance the bucket stuck out past the wheels. I'm guessing the 4 in 1 won't be any larger than the 73" bucket. As long as the wheels were not wider than the bucket I don't see why you would have a problem putting that machine on a cheap u-haul trailer.

I measured my 4200 for hauling the other day and came up with 13' x 5'. Yours is actually a bit narrower at the wheels than mine so those numbers will hold. I estimated 4000lbs too though 4500lbs may be a safer estimate.

Thanks all.

I called the dealer and he said inside wheel measurement was gonna be 28". That number was a head scratcher for me but combined with your replies it convinced me to stop trying to fight the tractor onto an awkward and too small trailer, sight unseen.

I'm going the craigslist route now, and it doesn't look too bad. Thanks to all!
