When changing filter, or cleaning screen, does the hydraulic start flowing out, or just what's in the filter?

Some people attach a vacuum cleaner hose to the fill hole. The suction keeps most of the fluid inside the tractor for easier filter changes. If no vacuum you have to be quick changing the filter. You will lose a couple quarts that you'll need to top of with when done.

Thank you very much for the advice. Does the same apply for cleaning the suction screen?

I doubt it. I've pulled and cleaned a few JD suction screens and they are all down low. If this is your first filter change The screen should be good. Wait till you need to change fluid to pull and clean.

Cancel that, just saw yours is a 2001. If you need to clean the screen you may as well change the fluid.

Yes, it's a 2001 JD4300. I had a rear axle seal failure at about 300 hours, and the dealer redid both sides under warranty, and I remember he changed the oil and filter because that part was charged to me. The tractor now has 970 hours. A friend with really JD large farm tractors also has a 4300, and he said changing the hydraulic oil is unnecessary unless there is a problem. The reason I'm thinking of changing the filter is because I feel there is some loss of power in the FEL and back hoe, but maybe I'm just imagining things. The oil is in the window and perfectly clear. The HST drive works fine, as does the three point hitch.

If you have over 670 hours since the dealer last changed the fluid due to the repair I would change the fluid, filter, and clean the screen. But that's what I would do. I personally don't go over 400 hours between changes. If there's a way to pull and clean the screen without changing the fluid I don't know how to do it.

Okay, thank you. I know it's a big bucket of oil, and I guess I'll start thinking about changing it.
