JD 4300
Hello All,
I have learned a ton reading all the info here having bought my first tractor, a JD 4300 Hydro...360hrs. The tractor will run from idle to rated rpm but as soon as I touch either the FWD or REV peddle, the engine rpms drop to 0. If I let off the peddle prior to stall, it will recover, if not, it stalls. I have sumped the fuel tank at the fitting and also changed the fuel filter, because I had the tractor acting up before I realized there was a fitting there to sump the fuel tank. Do you think my carberator is clogged. Thanks for your help in advance, this website and the people on it seem to be very helpful.

My FIL just bought a 4300. Keep us in the loop on this one, I'd like to know the solution.

Sounds like a problem with the safety circuit, most likely the seat switch is open, dislodged or broken. Used to have the same problem with mine when the snow got built up under the seat, stopping the switch from closing every time. Try shorting the two wires together at the switch and see if the problem goes away.

Why the secret Roy? I enjoy reading your answers:confused:

I'll agree with Pat on this, sounds like a safety interlock not working properly. But being that it starts to stall instantly I will guess the PTO switch, I believe there is a 2 second delay on the seat switch.

Your tractor may "Think" the PTO is engaged...

When I took delivery of my tractor it would run really rough when I was bouncing around on rough ground. I would bounce up enough to release the seat switch. I then reduced the rear tire pressure from 35lb down to about 15 and the problem went away. My switch was instant..plus the tractor should run weither or not the PTO is engaged. It might not start however..

Thanks for the input guys. I'll check the seat switch out tonight. I don't have a trailer to bring it to the dealer but I am an aircraft mechanic of 25 years so hopefully I can figure this out on my own.
Thanks again,
Chris

Hi Chris: I agree with the others that it is probably the seat safety switch. Lift up the seat and you will see a micro switch with two wires. Make sure that it is still plugged in and has a good connection. Also make sure that there is no debris under the seat that prevents the seat from pressing the safety switch.
Good Luck, Marshall
BTW: Diesel engines do not have carburetors. A fuel injector might be clogged but then you would have a steady miss.

I'd look for the neutral safety switch at the pedals.
Can't see how the seat switch could be involved in this instance, since Lear's not lifting off his seat.

Well, the seat switch checked good last night and the tractor ran like a top...Had some barn work to do and not a sputter. I think Roy might be onto something with the hydro pedal switch. I'll check that out tonight...as soon as I find it...hahaha Thanks again all. Chris
