1979 Ford 1500, Toro 455D 10' mower w/ Renault diesel,
I have an older serial # JD 430 lawn tractor. Now that deck is removed, it almost looks more like a tractor. :D:cool:
It has a 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel.

Anyways, we have a 60" mower deck driven by a PTO shaft into a gearbox. The mower deck also uses several pulleys & a double sided V belt. I have several Qs.

I see JD seems to have 2 models of the 60" deck, 0272 & 0273. How do I figure out which one I have?

I have 2 sets of blades, one set has part # M141785, and the other set is M87622. They look very similar. Why the different part #s?

There is a grease nipple on the gearbox. It also uses 80/90 gear oil. I took off the fill level plug and it was at the level, but very sludgy. Is that from mixing grease via the grease zirk? I can smell the gear oil.

This part that helps mount the deck at the front, broke. What is this called, i need to order another, or fix this.

This is the deck with one cover over the belt (right side). There is an adjustable belt tensioner under it. I tensioned the belt, but it won't let the cover fit back on. I wonder if that tells me there is no more tension of the belt remaining? I can definitely slide the tensioner adjuster, but then the cover doesn't fit.

Here is the adjustable tensioner.

And this is the slotted hole on the cover not fitting properly now.

LAST Q!!! (sorry, there are many)... Here is ubderside of deck. How do I align these blades i n relation to one another. OR do you call it timing them? (on my LT 155, timing belt broke, and they were supposed to be timed/aligned perpendicular to one another, or 12/6 o'clock to 3/9 o'clock). Anyways, I assume these should be somehow lined up in a certain sequence. THANKS!!!!!!

maybe i can help someone else with some answers:
1) the pivot arm is my broken piece. it is not an OEM part, so will need repair.
2) the blade position does not matter at all
3) grease zirk was an add-on. I drained sludge and filled with synthetic gear oil. JD dealer didn't like idea of adding grease to gear oil.
4) The tensioner cover I ended up slotting out so I can adjust/tension belt. I think this cover was homemade, and the factory cover has a long slot to allow for the tensioning.

I went to JD and gave them my blade number. They lookd it up and saw it fit several models. Best we can tell, I have a newer deck for the 455 series tractors. The 2 different 60" decks for the 430 never had belt tensioner, and never had the front hooks for the pivot arm to mount on the front. The newer decks had both. PC2358 is the catalog reference to find the different decks.

I have a 430 lawn/garden tractor with a 60" mmm and have decided to keep it, so I've replaced several parts both on the tractor and the mower. I go to the internet at: www.jdpc.deere.com and find the part numbers then go to: John Deere Parts Superstore for John Deere Lawn Tractors, John Deere Gators, John Deere Walk Behind Mowers and all John Deere Equipment, including John Deere Accessories. and enter the part number for availability and price, usually they have the item and the best price. They ship fast and if I have an old part number I can get support to tell me the correct updated number. Looking up the part number has an advantage, you will get an exploded view of the mower or tractor depending on what you look for. That is very helpful because it tells me what it should look like so I get the belt in the right place. Of course, you can send that order directly to your nearest John Deere Dealer as an order, pay for it online then go pick it up. Hope that helps, it has worked good for me so far.

i use the jd website/parts aswell. i find it very difficult to navigate to find what i'm looking for, and to view parts, etc... But it can be done. part of my issue is I'm not 100% OEM on this one. The local dealer was very helpful sorting through.

thanks for the link to the cheap parts seller.
