So I have to consider myself lucky. I’ve had my jd425 for 9 plus years with no issues
My question are as follows. The oil was changed when I purchased it in 2008. Should I change it again? Where is the drain, what type of oil and what capacity does it take? As far a hydrostatic, does that need to be changed? I guess that’s the oil plug directly in the rear by the hitch. When I check that oil do I need to screw the dipstick in? I can see the oil down there but it’s not registering on the stick. And lastly I need parts for this thing. A few deck parts and an air filter fastener. What the best place for buying parts for this thing? I have idea of parts numbers and I can’t really seam to find a blow up microfiche style. So the parts supplier need to be user friend for me. Thanks in advance. Pictures below for reference IMG_4639.JPGi need this wheel

For drawings with part numbers try JDParts: Unsigned Landing Page
I change engine oil yearly.
Transaxle oil by hours.
I suggest getting the owner's manual. It details how to preform home maintence

Yeah. I’d rather not spend north of $100 on a manual to simply change the oil. If anyone can clue me in on oil capacity for the 425 and type. I can tackle one TJ g at a time. Just did a nice parts order of maintenance items like oil filters and air filters and some misc nuts and bolts that my tractor needed. Will diesel truck oil work on this engine?

By the sounds of it, you need to learn a lot about how to care for your 425, IMHO. So far, it has been abused but being a faithful Deere continues to keep going.
Check out what replacement cost will be if suddenly you don't have it anymore.
Sorry if this is being too rough on you.
Go get the manual. See your Deere dealer for the oil change kits that they have, as well as the manual. Get the transmission filter at the same time.
But remember, you may be too late to salvage a great Deere (I think the best model they've made in the last 50 years).

Why bother at this point in time. The nylon cam gear is probably going to explode at any time now.

Maybe this 425 is not of the older model that had the plastic cam.. we've not been told the build date or the serial number.

I just bought a 425 myself and a helpful member here (exeter27) informed me that JD changed the yellow decal to the more yellow design the year they switched from the plastic cam gear the steel version. Based on this, the OP's 425 does have the plastic cam gear.

I'd say in any mowing season it takes me an hour to do my lawn. So probably 6 months x 4 mows a month = 24 mows a year x 10 years sounds about 240 hrs. Plus snow season. Figure 300 hrs. Yeah I'd say it's due. I know the replacement cost of these units. I did buy this one in 08. I also know it has a bullet prof Japanese engine like my Honda's and I check the oil level regularly and have never had to add. I got mobile 1 synthetic 10w30 since I don't have a good track record of changing frequently. I got the oil filter, air filter a new wheel for the deck coming to me from green farm parts. The vin. Let me look it up. Standby.

I'm also going to tackle the trans oil next assuming this needs to be changed. I have had to top that off from time to time but I am curious to know if your dip stick needs to be screwed down or simply dropped in for checking. Thanks for all your help and a link to the manuals.

Here is the Vin. I think it’s an early 425. If the plastic gear blows. I’ll have to pull out my checkbook. Let me know you thoughts on the trans fluid as questioned above.
