Hi guys, I have a JD 4200 with a 420 loader that we purchased a couple of months ago. We noticed the cylinder for the tilt on one side of the loader was bent and figured it would eventually become an issue. From the picture you can see that the other day the rod broke and now I need to come up with a fix. The local JD supplier is charging ~$500 to repair by putting a new rod on and rebuilding, and $560 for a new replacement.

Has anyone tried using a non OEM replacement on a 420 loader (or a 410 or 430 loader as I believe the cylinders are identical)? Would I need to replace both tilt cylinders if I went that route. Is the best bet just to pay the $560 and get the replacement?

Any help would be appreciated thanks!

You likely wont find a aftermarket replacement that specifically says its for that loader.

Rather you need to shop by size. Bore diameter, extended and retracted length, and what ends are on the cylinder.

It looks like it has an extended rod (rod longer than needed) in order to mount to the loader. That may cause issues trying to find one aftermarket.

If you have some dimensions, bore, stroke, etc post them and we may be able to find something. But unlikely you will find a direct replacement, and may have to do some minor work to make an aftermarket one fit. And if going this route you will need 2 cylinders. Also worth noting that aftermarket will be a chrome plated rod.

Of the other two options you list. I would go with a new cylinder for for not much more money vs the rebuilt one for sure.

Thanks for the input guys! Based on what you said and some co-corkers of mine I just went this morning and paid the $550 for a completely new cylinder. Apparently for my specific loader JD will not even sell the rod anymore so you have to get a new cylinder with rod.

It was convenient that they had the cylinder in stock, the guy said a lot of people beat up the 420 loaders so they usually have parts in stock for them.

I also took a look at the link of the guy replacing the cylinders with larger ones. Looks like a neat project but as of now I don't have the time to do all of that.

The 420 loader has rods that are only 25mm in diameter, and very easy to bend at full extension. I have straightened
several of them. The 430 is a much better loader with thicker rods.

That's a lotta cheddar for a new cylinder, prob about the same as TWO new aftermarket cyls with thicker rods.

I would be tempted to take the old cylinder to a machine shop and have them make a new rod for it. Somewhere after market will have the seals and then you have a spare cylinder for when you break another one.
