JD 420 Garden Tractor
I'm a newbie at this tractor stuff, so bare with me.

I bought a JD 420 Garden Tractor with a type 40 loader on it. I know this is the wrong loader, it should be a type 44.

Nonetheless, this is what I have along with some problems.

Problem #1

The round cross member, about half way down the loader arm is coming to close to the hydraulic fittings in the lower front of the tractor.

Is it possible to limit the actuation so the loader arms only go so far?

Problem # 2

The loader struggles to lift the 60" deck 6" off the ground with a lot of throttle . I've been told the 60" deck is 350 lbs.

I'm not interested in lifting more than 350 lbs. but 350 lb.4 ft or so would be helpful.

Help!

Here's a pic if you can imagine the loader in the down position. The horizontal bar can hit the hydraulic fittings!

#1: Nice looking setup!

#2: Relocate the hydraulic fittings away from the front bumper.

#3: Check your hydraulic pressure, shim your relief valve or replace worn parts as necessary.

It looks like the 40 loader is trying to just use the hydraulics that are built into the 420, which do not have the capacity to properly operate a loader. I attached a few pics from the 44 loader manual showing the separate PTO operated hydraulic pump and the reservoir with SCV. It is an independent system that does not use the standard hydraulic fittings on the front of the tractor. The 60 inch deck for the 420 weighs 310 pounds. The rated capacity of the 44 loader with the proper hydraulic system is 500 pounds. The system is rated 4.5 gpm at 1200 psi.

Looked a little more through my reference materials. The 40 loader does use just the tractor hydraulics and has a rated lift capacity of 350 pounds vs 500 pounds for the 44 with separate pump system.

I too just picked up a 420 and want to put a front end loader on it. What are the hydraulic fittings for on the front if they were not intended for a loader?

For things like front blades or brooms. I had a 430 (diesel version of the 420) long ago and used them with a blade.

140115 430 log haulin1.jpgShouldn't have too much difficulty selling the 40 and buying a 44 that matches. The 44 (made 1984-88 only) is a little harder to find, but they come up for sale fairly regularly if you're looking, will cost about $2500 or so, and you may have to buy a complete tractor w/loader to get it. Should be able to sell the 40 for about the same price. I have a 44 on my 430, it taps out right at 500lbs lift, little more than that tilting/breakout force. So yeah, you'll want to lift more than 350 sooner than later. If you do switch, make sure you get the 44 that is made for the 420/430, the 300 series 44 is not interchangeable with the 400 series tractors.

Illness, if all you want to do is limit how far the loader will go down. You could get stroke control spacers from tractor supply co. They are little spacers that are spring loaded that clip over the ram of a cylinder. So they can only close until they hit the new stop. Here is the tsc part number 1832997. I use these on my pull type mower to set the deck height. Hope this helps.
