My 1984 JD 420 is missing the tail pipe from the muffler. Looking at replacement mufflers I notice the pipe coming out through the body is straight, however, the way my muffler sits it looks like a straight pipe would run directly into the body panel. Were there different mufflers for the different engines? In order to make a pipe fit I would have to form an S bend to get it to come through the exhaust hole in the body.

Does it look like this?

Yes except slightly different. In that pic where they show the mitered tail pipe, my tail pipe hole is located more to the front of the tractor. I double checked again today to make sure and there is no way a strait tail pipe could work. It would run right into the body panel. Just havent been able to find a muffler to match. If it will help I can take a pic and post it.

Thanks this is very helpful! Do you think they just put a wrong muffler on?

Maybe...
That muffler is the only one I see on the parts diagrams. Generally the JD parts pictures are pretty accurate.
Two options on the motors. Onan B48G or P220G but it looks like they both use the same muffler to me?

Here a pic describes better than words. This is my jd and you can see how the muffler on it resembles the one in the parts diagram or any other 420 muffler picture on ebay, however, the outlet location is different than any I'd seen before. Also you can see from the pics that if the previous owner hadnt cut off the tail pipe, it would not have gone through the hole in the fender. the way it looks I'm not certain the new one will either?

you do have the WRONG muffler.
your muffler outlet is at 12 o clock.
the J.D. muffler outlet is at 9 o clock.
your pipes also look really bad.
