JD 4115 clicking, won\'t start

After I was finished mowing today, I went to put the loader back on the tractor and turned it off to connect the hyds. When I went to start it, it just made a clicking sound, from under the dash. I checked the battery and the + was big time corroded, I cleaned it up real good but to no avail.

After removing the lower dash, I found the relay closest to the drivers seat on the right side was making the noise. It has heavy red and blue wires going to it and smaller green and brown(?). The injector pump solenoid clicks and the starter clicks and stutters but won't spin. I have my charger hooked up for higher amps and still the same. The next relay is the same as the rear one, so I swapped the connectors and had the same result. I even removed the starter, which is still removed, and the relay still clicks.

Has anyone ever had this problem before? I am thinking something simple is at fault, but am drawing a blank. I would lean towards bad solenoid on the starter, but this unit only has 140 hrs. on it.

Any input is appreciated. Hope this is the right place to post these questions.

not sure if your prolem is same as mine ( i have a kubota) but every once in a while mine does the same thing, but i hit the key a few times and it starts, cleanded all the terminals and it still happens onec in a bit. dealer says it is most likly the contacts on solenoid. but have not got into that yet. you might want to check that.

Re: JD 4115 clicking, won\'t start

Update.

With the starter on the bench, 250 amps on the starter terminals, the starter gear never comes out. I have the positive going to the terminal that runs to the starter motor and the negative on the starter frame. If I have everything correct, I believe I have a bad bendix.

I will take the starter to a repair shop for checkout and advice.

I know nothing about the 4115, but if it has safety switches, pto, seat, hst, like the 4x00, this is most likely the cause, once the battery has been checked. If its a safety switch, the engine won't krank.

Ditto, check the safety switches, especially the Seat, PTO and Gear/Neutral.

Mike,

Are you out of warranty? Just checking....

Re: JD 4115 clicking, won\'t start

The problem was the battery. Original battery, JD strongbox must have developed a bad cell or corrosion on + terminal must have caused it to go bad. I never actually measured the volage at first. I went by the meter on my charger which said good battery. When I measured the battery with a DMM, it read 10.8 volts, obviously bad. Replaced the battery and everything okay.

I just can't believe the thing started okay after sitting for 2 weeks and then just like that the battery goes bad. Wonder if the corrosion on battery caused it?

Anyway, thanks for the input.

Re: JD 4115 clicking, won\'t start

Batteries short out sometimes. The battery in my S-10 died on me like that. I pulled up at a store and shut the truck off. Came back out and tried to start it. It was deader than road kill. The battery shorted out internally.
