Hi, forgive me for being less then intelligent with a diesel engine. I was snowblowing today and my 4100 just quit. It will crank etc but no start. I think It might be fuel related but unsure how to check it. I was going to pull glass filter to see if anything was in it because it does not look like anything is in there at all actually. How would I diagnose this? Its stuck in the middle of my driveway LOL Thanks!

Does the 4100 have a drain for the fuel tank? Mine on the 4310 is on the right side just up from the hydro pedals. If the fuel gels, this is where mine plugs first. I take a propane torch. Like the ones used for sweating pipe. I heat the area around the valve. Carefully! the valve and tank are plastic. Hit it with a little heat, try to start it, heat and start. I keep doing until it runs.

Hi and thanks for the reply! I found the problem. I took the filter bowl down and the filter was full of frozen water. Thawed it out, blew it out(dont have access to a new one today) and while the bowl was off, drained some more fuel to be sure there was no water. Been snowblowing for the past hour and no issues. Guess I need to drain that once and a while lol. Im glad it was a simple fix.

Watch if night temps go below 10 F. Had it happen one winter here 2 or 3 years ago. Had some wax particles drop out and plug the outlet from the fuel tank on my JD 4010. Had to siphon out the tank and use a fish tool to get the wax particles out.

Mike - use a quality Winter fuel additive, if you aren't already. Ex. Stanadyne, OptiLube XPD, Redline etc....

And yes, you need to keep an eye on, and drain, the water separator

Also consider getting something like a Mr. Funnel, or equivalent, that will filter water from fuel - meaning for when you are filling the tank.

Thanks! Didnt know a funnel was made that separated water from fuel? Thats a great idea although have you seen much water in fuel straight from the pump? I though it maybe came from condensation or when it rained and I left it outside.

I normally don't have a big problem with my diesel source, as it's a very high volume station.

Keep in mind though, condensation can happen inside fuel cans too, not just the tractor tank.

Until you get a handle on exactly where the water is coming from, a Mr Funnel (or equiv.) is a bit of cheap insurance. Also handy if you are fuelling in dusty conditions too.
