I have a JD4100 that quit working. It would not start so I jump started it and after it started and I removed the jumpers it ran for a minute and then a POP sound and poof of smoke came out around the fuel filter area. I shut the tracto off quick and examined and did not see anything that jumped out at me. I tried to start the tractor and it turns over but does not start. Is there anywhere I can get an electrical schematic for this? Any ideas?

Welcome to TBN:D

The electrical schematics are only available in the Factory Service Manual-either printed or on a CD. The CD's are about $70 or so.

Have you checked the fuses? They are under the right side cover above the fuel filter area. I have the CD for the 4110, witch is pretty much the same as your 4100 except for updated sheet metal.

Yes I checked the 4 fuses on top and they are fine. The pop and poof were down lower like right behind fuel filter.

OK then, There is a fuel cutoff solenoid on the injector pump-you could see if there is power there when the key is in the RUN position.

I don't want to sound dumb but where would that be.

I have the solenoid how do I test it. There are 4 small relays below the ignition switch One pulls in when key is turned to on. Should there be more pulling in?

Try holding the fuel selenoid open by hand if its not opening when you turn on the key. With it held open, crank the engine to see if it starts.

How do I hold it open by hand???

Sorry, I think I'm sending you down the wrong road. I was thinking your model still had the fuel shutoff selenoid with the external linkage, that you could hold open with your hand. I just looked at the JDParts and it appears to have a plunger that is internal on the pump. So, holding it open by hand will not be possible. Sorry again for the misdirection.

Sincerely, Dirt

Don't know about the 4100, but on the 42,3 and 4400 the solenoid is on the end of the injector pump, right hand side of engine. If you remove the solenoid you should find that it pops "out" when power is applied. When mine burnt out (same puff of smoke) I made a plate to cover the hole where the solenoid bolts on (oil splashes out). In this plate I drilled and tapped a hole for a 1/4x20 bolt which I could screw in to start the tractor or screw out to shut off the fuel and stop the tractor. (None of the safeties worked when I did this)
It was an awkward system but kept my driveway clear for a week last winter until the new solenoid came in...
I have a feeling that your solenoid may be OK (Your tractor kept running after the puff) but something in the solenoid pull-in circuit may have blown....
