I saw my first 4010 next to a 2305 at the local big JD ag dealer. I was quite impressed with the 4010, seemed more "industrial" less residential in size, tires, loader, tiller, at least how that particular one was spec'd. The 2305 was also very nice. I never even considered the 4000 series as they seemed too agricultural, but now that I've seen it, I'm curious. Can anyone tell me what the 4010 can do better than the 2305/2210 can't?

I'll be turning 2.2 acres of farmland into lawn. Basement has just been poured (yay!). I'll need to till, level, seed, and do loader work, maintain ~400 ft of gravel drive. Maybe a BH too.

Thanks.

Jay

Welcome to TBN,
I'd seriously keep an eye out for the new 2320 if you can wait that long.

Jay,

As you saw, the 4010 gets you into the small frame models -- bigger diameter tires, foldable ROPS, full vs. limited 3PH etc. It does however have only 14 PTO hp, and depending on the size implements you are planning on running, it could run out of power pretty quickly. If you are set on a BH, the 4010 would need an aftermarket one like the 2210/2305 -- why not look at the 4110. You move up to 7.4 gpm hydraulic flow and 17 PTP hp. Then again, maybe you should be looking at the new 2520 -- it's priced pretty competitively (when compared to the 4115 it replaces) and the same could be said for the 2320 which will replace the 4110 when it comes out in the near future. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ground clearance/underside layout differ. Suggest you take a look at the underside of both tractors. Keep in mind what sort of obstacles you'll be encountering in your farmland conversion efforts to see if one is more suited or not. Good luck.

Possession on our house is June 1, so I'll be making a deal sometime this spring. I've never owned a tractor (city boy turning country!) but initially I was looking at lawn tractors, then garden tractors, then discovered sub-CUT's, and now find myself looking at real CUT's. Sheesh. Will it never end?

One thought is to get a CUT, finish all the landscaping, then trade it in on a sub-CUT for lawn/driveway maintenace.

Has anyone used a 4000 series for this type of residential work? I love to hear from people who've been there. (Like JDfanatic /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

I have a 4100 - the predecessor version to the 4110. Mostly same specs, slightly less HP and Hyd. flow. Same attachments.

I purchased so as to have something "big" enough to do all the yard-building and to have something handy for small digging, material-moving chores while actually building our house. The idea it would eventually be retirde to just a lawn mower and snowplow with the occasional re-landscaping chore.

We used it to place all the drainage pea-gravel, all the sand under the basement and garage slabs, moving stuff around with the forks, cleaning off a bunch of the rocks and debris. I adapted a hyd trencher to it to install sprinkers, etc.

For the actual house-building chores, the small CUT was sometimes too small. A better choice would be a used Skid-steer, esp a tracked one.

For yard-building, it was just right.

For maint of less than 1 acre, its might overkill. Does OK on snow removal (wish I had a cab), and on mowing the grass, but is kind of heavy - you have to be carefull when you mow. Rated at something like 2.5 acres per hour of mowing with the 60" deck. At that pace, my yard theoretically should take only 12 minutes to cut. Its actually about 20 minutes.

I am also concerned about compaction.

On the other hand, its really handy having the forklift for installing the dock, moving junk in the garage, etc (half of what needs to be moved all the time is other tractor attachments in the way). I would be hard pressed to give it up.

Thank you keeney, just what I was looking for. We'll be planting lots of trees, and putting in the driveway, so a bigger machine sounds beneficial. We're not doing any of the actual home building, except some interior finishing. With all the heavy work you did, did you ever wish for a backhoe? How did you find digging with the bucket?

I looked at the 4010, 2210 and Kubota BX and 7530. Went with the 4010 a year ago.

It's the same weight as the 2210 and uses the same implements. Have hauled 20+ tons of gravel with it in the FEL. You just need filled tires and at least 300# on the 3ph to do this safely.

The only thing you might find it short on hp is if you need to use a tiller; think it'll work; just go slower or not as deep. I've an oil soil ripper that a friend gave me off his old JD M. It pulls it fine and serves as my substitute tiller (in already tilled soil). Have put 2 big 16" opposed discs on the soil ripper bar to make raised rows. Worked fine. Have since sold my Gravely and its rotary plow. Don't need it now.

If you need to do much digging, you'll need a BH. A 4110 is the way to go for that. The FEL is just too wide to do a significant amount of digging in other than soft soil. BHs are skinny. That's how they dig.

I have a 4110 , with FEL 61" bucket and loaded rear tires (R4's) no mower deck, had it since 2002. We have about 2 arces and a horse barn. It handles all of the barn chores , snow removal and general yard care. Plenty of power for what I use it for. I have a ride lawn tractor that I use to mow with. Once that goes I will get a rear 3PH finish mower. Easier to take on and off then the belly or MMM mowers. If you are thinking of the 4110 I would wait for the 2320 if time is on your side. Get the most machine you can based on your budget

Hope this helps

Marko and RalphVa: would you mind if I asked you how much you paid for your machines? Prices are different in Canada I know. I've looked at the main sub-CUTs, and with loaders and MMM all seemed to be around the low $20,000 range. I looked at BX2230, MF 2300, NH TZ series, Case DX24. Prices were quite different for the basic tractor and attachements, but curiously added up to not much difference.
