Does anyone know the kind of plastic used in the hoods of JD 3320? An unfortunate accident has left a crack in my hood; when researching how to repair it, I learn that the kind of plastic material used determines the kind of repair material. I sent a query to John Deere, but have received no response yet. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I would like to know as well. Last winter I only had the tractor a month. Had a bucket full of fire wood and one stray log fell over the back and cracked the hood right on top. If it had been in the summer time the log probably would have bounced off. You have to look for the crack but I know it's there.

DanD, and any others who are interested, I finally heard from John Deere and they identified the plastic as a "composite polymer," no other description. I hope that's enough info to do the job. Bd

Yeah, I want to know what kind of plastic, too, and "composite polymer"
is no help.

I have never played around with plastic welding, but maybe someone else
on TBN has. The plastic is about 1/8" thick and green all the way thru.
Lacquer thinner will dissolve it and it will eventually oxidize. I have had
good luck with polishing it with automotive polishing compound.

A new hood for my 4300 was $220 for the shell, and all the other parts of
it pushed the total to near $400. I expect the 3x20 hoods to be similar
in cost.

Well been there done that. Had a football sized rock fall from full load height while loading my dump trailer. I saw the rock bounce and assumed no damage well guess what a 10" crack in my hood. I was quite PO'd, called my dealer to get the repair price. I almost choked when he called me back. It was over $700 bucks without the decals. Well I figured like you guys that I'm make a repair and just live with it. So I got some glue and then epoxy to try and make it look ok. But is still didn't. I was looking on ebay for filters one day and low and behold a new hood listed by a dealer for NR. So I ended up getting the hood shipped to me for a few hundred. The hood and sides are one piece so to save on shipping I had them remove the rivots and ship just the hood. I also bought the new decals at this time. The decals cover the rivots the bond the hood and sides and they can't be reused. I haven't installed the new hood yet since I did alot of work spreading rip rap and other rock over the summer. I've got another couple loads to work in the spring and then I'll replace the hood. So keep your eyes open for a replacement hood, there out there.

It's a soybean / corn ethanol polymer made for Deere by Ashland Composite Polymers division of Ashland Oil. The trade name is ENVIREZ. The problem is that Deere went to Ashland about 10-12 years ago with the idea of making an organic based polymer sheet molded product to use for Deere products (the soybean polymer is from research done at a number of universities). Based on Deere's annual usage, Ashland agreed to start making the material and they keep improving the product so it can change from year-to-year.

Basically, it is an organic polyester resin, and most of what Deere uses is a slab compression molded (SCM) version of the material as opposed to a sprayed / molded.

If you treat it as a polyester resin composite, you should be okay.

Swines, thank you for the great info. I'm impressed that you are able to provide so much more precise information than John Deere itself. I plan to have the damage repaired by a local body shop, if possible, but on my own if not, and your info is required by the body shop or by me in order to do this. I appreciate the help of all my fellow tractor owners. Bud
