Anyone own or now anyone who own's the new JD 3038e. We looked at one over the weekend. Have 13 acres to bushhog and need to lift haybales. The tractor looks so small as compared to the old massey 135 and 175 we currently have. Need something easy to operate. Husband had knee replacement 10 weeks ago and heart attack 3 weeks ago. Would appreciate any feedback anyone might have.

You're correct in the size assessment. The 3038e is not in the same league as your old Massey's. And it's not gonna be a good choice for moving large haybales - IMO.

You should up your sight's to at least a 4000 series machine with a 400CX loader. They have the eHydro transmission for ease of operation with loader work.

Best of luck.

The 3038E is a great tractor, but look at the 5045D for heavier stuff. We went to the dealer to look at both. Ended up with the 5045D for just a little more $$$...

Agree with AKfish, a 4000 series with ehydro would be easy to operate. Might want to pay extra for an air ride seat too.

Hope your husband is OK.

I own a 3038e. Moving large hay bales around would definitely be pushing it's capabilities. I think that the Operator's Manual even discourages the practice. Currently there are no JD factory accessories available to allow for the FEL to lift hay bales anyway. There is some after market stuff available that would work but you would need to be VERY careful in the operation of the unit or you could get into trouble real quick.

I plan to fabricate my own FEL attachment to move the occasional bale around but I will be VERY careful and always attach plenty of ballast to the rear of the tractor.

Bottom line: I recommend a larger tractor for this work to anyone who isn't adept at Redneck Engineering.

I own a 3038e as well but never plan on moving any hay around except for the occassional square for my goats. Most of my land is filled with oaks and the smaller frame was actually desired to make it easier to move around the 6 acres..
