Hey guys I just came across your site and wanted to pick your brains on a potential deal I am working on.

I am new to the tractor world, and am looking at a JD 300 and not the riding mower. I found a 300 with the bucket loader and backhoe attachments on it for sale. The current owner has done a lot of work on the tractor assuming more work on it than with it. He had the hydraulics rebuilt, and some other maint work, and claims to have over 7500.00 invested into it. The hydralliucs are all good, and comes with a spare pump for the front of the tractor and extra brand new hoses.

He said that everything is in working order now except for the fact it wont go forwards

The engine was professionally rebuilt before he bought it and he has only about 50 hours on it since then.

It has the 8 speed trans, with shuttle drive. I asked one person who told told me it sounds like the entire trans needs to be rebuilt for about $1500.00 or more. From my perspective I am thinking that it is a problem with the shuttle drive and not the trans itself and could be a reasonable fix.

Because it doesn't go forwards it has been sitting outside and it pretty weathered. It is going to need a lot of sprucing up too, including a paint job.

He is not sure but believes that the tractor needs to be split in two to resolve the issue and shouldn't be attempted at home for that reason.

Other than that he will accept my offer of $4K for it.My plans are to use it around the house, little light digging, grading etc, looking at a 3pt log splitter attachment.

Is there anyone that is familar with shuttler drives or are there other posting i can resource to see what is entaled in fixing this?

Put it on 10% w neutral pedal and itll do about 5 feet per minute.nd claims to have over 7500.00 invested into it. The hydralliucs are all good, and comes with a spare pump for the front of the tractor and extra brand new hoses.

Are u sure this is a 300.
According to The Jd literature the 300 is either a lawn tractor or a garden tractor that does not have a FEL or Back Hoe option..

try checking the linkage from the shuttle lever. sounds like something is not connected, or not connected properly.

Just going on what was said, the seller seems like he is pretty knowledgeable about the machine, and was up front about the problem and has likely had it diagnosed. I'm not super knowledgeable about that system, but if you run the engine and can't get any forward movement out of the tractor whatsoever, I would presume the worst if considering buying it, because it will likely cost a lot more than $1500 to repair if it has to be split and the tranny rebuilt. Also the fact that it has been sitting outside and is weathered kind of sounds like the guy is trying to get rid of his boat anchor. Some careless people with front end loaders tend to fiercely jam them down and in to things, which is what could have damaged the tranny.

I was told by a mechanic that sort of specializes in the JD300`s that the
problem is most likely the front hydraulic clutch in the schuttle transmission.
A repair cost of appox $1500.00 (in east texas)
These are fine old tractors but they are old. Hope this helps.
