Looking for some advice and tips from individuals that have replaced the rotor/drum bearings. I read thru several threads and posts on the subject. Looking for a little more detail. I bought a really nice used JD 25A (2013 model year) several years ago and have only used it a couple of time. Unit has always been stored inside by original owner and me. I've only used it a couple of times. Now, I have 5 miles of trails and a couple of fields to mow. I've always cleaned the shafts around the roller and the rotor next to the bearings. However, my rotor drive side bearing failed 2 days ago while I was mowing my back field. Drive belt side of mower started smoking and I immediately shut the unit down. Pulled the cover and found that the shielding on the drive side bearing has melted and has what appears to be bailing twine wrapped around the bearing shaft. I can see the bearing balls so time to replace the bearing. I just bought two new bearings and collars from JD. How big a job is this? I’m going to replace both sealed bearings. Realizing that the rotor/drum has to be supported. Can I do one side at time or do I have to loosen both ends to replace each bearing? Once you remove the pulley and collar, it looks like you loosen the inner bearing support and then the larger support plate. Again, any tips or tricks would be appreciated. Thanks in advance - Ted

Not familiar with the Deere, but if the bearing and support plate are on the outside of the frame, there is no reason you can’t do each side individually.

Thanks for your reply. The bearing and support are in the inside of the frame. It looks to me that I have to loosen the bolts holding the bearing support bolts surrounding the bearing #20 in the attached diagram, then remove the bolts holding the large frame plate #8 and hopefully pull enough of the bearing supports to actually get to the bearing. I need to get this piece of equipment back into operation. Looking for some help. Thanks. jd25adiagram.png

Both rotor bearings are on the inside of the frame? If so, then both bearing attaching hardware needs to be removed, then the rotor removed. There are no shortcuts.

Thanks again for the reply. I've searched on this forum and others on the JD 25A drum/rotor bearing removal and it appears from the pictures that individuals are doing just one side at a time. That's why I'm looking for feedback from someone that has actually done it. Maybe I'm wrong? The posts that I've been able to find on this subject don't finish with what was finally done. Pictures with bearings and supports removed, looks like one side only. I'm just wondering the sequence/procedure. If there is a thread with posts that explain it, please provide me a link. JD dealer said that they do one side at a time, guy that does it is on vacation, they need serious $ to do it, are backed up and I have to deliver the 25A to them 40 miles away and then go pick it up. I'm in more of a hurry to get the unit back in service.

Did you look at this post?

Is yours like the previous post or with the removable plate like the following post?

TractorTech, I do really appreciate your effort to help me! Yes, I have seen both those posts. The last link is the situation that I have on my flail. I saw leonz's post and then frankydp's post but frankydp never came back with what happened when he removed the bearing support and plate. No follow-up. I don't want to use dry ice as I have animals everywhere. I was curious as to what style puller he used to remove the bearing or what he used? I don't have power in my barn (no lights), small tractor door and building jammed full of tractor junk, LOL. So, I will have to work on the 25A at the open end of my barn and once I take it apart, nothing else leaves the barn until I get it back together. Once I block up the rotor/drum and remove the bearing support I'm out of business until I get it back together. So, I want to make sure that I everything lined up as much as possible before I start disassembly.

Buy the physical book from Deere for the 25A flail mower SKU PC0938 $13.55.
Go to staples and buy a 1 inch 3 ring binder and enough sheet protectors to protect
the copies of the sheets of the flail mower book.
Have Staples make copies of each sheet of the book.

You need to remove the bearing locks to remove the rotor to clean both rotor end stubs to do it properly.
There is no short way to do this as both bearings should be replaced.

Make sure you have a large high quality tarp on the ground before you even move the mower to block it up as you will
need to use a magnet if you drop any set screws to find them.
You need to purchase blue some loctite and print out a copy of the bolt torque values do you can torque them correctly.

You need to rent an engine hoist for a day or two to do this with much less trouble as you need to move the flail mower rotor away from the
Flail mower shroud to set it on hard wood blocks or sturdy sawhorses as it is very heavy.

1. drain the oil out of the gearbox
2. remove the bearing guard over the open bearing
3. remove the V belt guard and V belts and get new ones as long as your doing bearing surgery as you do need them.
4. flip it on its back and go to work labeling every part and taking pictures as you work

Your going to need Dawn Dish Soap and warm water in a 5 gallon pail and lots of rags to help get rid of the dirt and grease
and good hand cleaner and alcohol to clean the side weldments of the flail mower and the bearing mounting flanges.

Remove as much of the grease and dirt with wet blue shop towels soaked in soapy water first and then use a small putty knife
to scrape away any stubborn baked on dirt and grease before you remove the bearing flange plates.

The bearing seals MUST BE correctly installed with the open side of the bearing facing outward otherwise the grease will not enter the bearings.

Completely understand. I have done many of the Ford 917 and 918 flails and I am just trying to get visibility for your post so someone will jump in. Leonz did and now, hopefully, you can get yours fixed!

Thank you to leonz and Tractor Tech for the help. Here are a couple of pics of the flail when I brought it home a couple of years. Actually, better shape as I cleaned it up quite a bit.

leonz - as I've said that I have limited space and animals. As you can see, the unit is really clean and there is not much grease and dirt on the underside. Is it possible to block the drum up and with the flail frame on jack stands, then starting on the drive side, split the bearing supports without removing the drum from the unit and remove the bearing? Since I don't want to use dry ice because of animals, what pullers would you recommend? Thanks again for any and all help. Ted
