JD 2520 steering valve

My 2520 lost steering suddenly without any evidence of any other problems. No hydraulic leaks, levels are up, hydraulic steering rod intact, tie rod etc..
I suspect the steering valve at the base of the steering column, the steering wheel rotates either direction continuously with only minor resistance. Don’t know where else to look.
Can this valve be tested ? I’m a pretty good mechanic not by trade but just experience,
I’m trying to decide whether to undertake this valve removal myself or are special tools and expertise required. Thanks

Is your 2520 a CUT or rowcrop model? If CUT it's possible snap ring(item 7) has gotten out of groove allowing steering shaft to rise out of steering valve. Another possibility is steering cylinder piston packing has failed.

The 2520 is a compact utility, there isn’t any vertical play in the steering shaft.
