jd 2520 50 hr service

hello, i have a 2008 2520 i am at 50 hrs and want to service it. i am changing all filters and oils i have a question on engine oil my dealer gave me 15w-40 and said thats what they use in all of them but my manual says 5w-30 which is correct or the best way to go? also what is the correct capacity? any other service tips would be appreciated thank you

15w40 is fine, it's the most common oil used in diesel pickups, OTR trucks and pretty much anything else that is diesel.

FWIW, I did the 50hr a few months back on my 3520 and I used the "Break In" oil from JD which is a 5w30....confusing I know...Dealer/Different Manuals/Underhood stickers all say something different...Long and short of it was both my BIL (Cat Mechanic) and the Deere Service Dept both agreed that the Break-In oil was the best to use.
I've got 25 hours on the new oil change and I'll go a little bit longer and then change to the 0w40 Syn from JD for winter time.

I had the same issue and decided to go with Shell Rotella 5w-30 diesel oil. Dealer didn't even carry any of the oils that were specified in the manual and looked at me like I was from outer space when I asked for it.

As for the quantities, I think mine took right at 4 quarts, even though the manual said 3.

Also, don't forget to drain the two plugs on your final drives when changing your hydraulic fluid. My manual didn't mention it, so I didn't figure it out until I already had $65 worth of new oil back in the system.

My 4010 owner's manual says 5w30 covers the full temperature range. That's what I used the first 3 years. Just switched to the new 0w30. It's even better for improving engine performance and protecting it on cold startup. Have switched to 0w30 in all my engines.

Ditto here. Had the exact same experience as Dave. My dealer has a fairly large, well trained service dept and they highly recommended using Break-In oil up to 100 hrs and then switching to 15W-40. Not being an expert on this, I followed their recommendation.
