JD 2440 Shift Tower P-R-H-L Replacement

Suggestions on replacing John Deere 2440's shift tower for Park/Reverse/High/Low... The shift lever will literally lift out of the socket if I'm not extra careful. Cost of new vs. used... manual and/or diagram of steps involved.

I assume when you say shift tower, you have the park assurance kit on your tractor as shown in diagram. There is a snap ring and bearing/special washer that hold the shifter in place. There is a kit that comes with instructions to replace theses parts. The kit is re18116, item number 15. If the aluminum shift cover is worn at the snap ring groove, you may need to replace the cover to get the shifter to stay in securely. The retaining kit is relatively inexpensive. I recommend you try it before you replace the cover. If your shift boots are torn or cracked, you should replace them at this time also. They keep water out of the transmission when out in the weather or when washing the tractor.
