Hi folks,
I'm currently looking at a 2440 in hopes of replacing a tractor of similar size in our small hay op and to help with farm maint. I'd love to hear opinions good and bad from anyone with experience owning/operating one of these units or maintenance techs that are aware of reoccurring issues. What should I be looking for as red flags? Also, any suggestions for a loader to work well on one of these for bale handling.

Thanks in Advance,
Tim

I replied to your same question on the other forum but I overlooked FEL question. JD model 145,175,146,240,245,620 will fit to name some of them. If FEL has hyd valve be sure it's the closed center type and route return hose to a ported hyd filter cover.

I have a 2940, which I believe is two sizes larger. I ASSume that there are similarities.

The starter just clicking and not turning the tractor over due to low voltage at the starter is a common problem. A search will turn up a LOT of people with these issues. Neutral safety switches with high resistance, bad key switches, etc. are often culprits. Installing a relay in between the switch and solenoid is a common solution.

The hydraulics quit on mine. Long, painful story, but I finally discovered what a "destroking valve" is. It's a little screw valve on top of the hydraulic pump. It disables the front pump for easier cold weather starts. It tends to turn itself every 10 hours or so and shuts the hydraulics down. I felt like a dummy once I found the problem, but am glad I did. I was a day or so from ordering a new pump. I have a Koyker loader on it. I don't remember the model number and the tractor is not available now. No complaints there except for a slightly flimsy bucket.

Someone a lot smarter than me will probably be along shortly.

Replacing hyd pump without ""proper diagnostics"" to determine that frt hyd pump wasn't really at fault is a BIG NO-NO in my opinion. Most closed center hyd problems are caused from internal leaks or poor GPM supply oil to frt pump not the frt pump. I learned this many yrs back while serving as a JD dealer service manager when 40 series JD tractors were new.
