JD 2305
Hi guys,

I have been reading a lot in these forums, but this being my first post. I find some of the comments quite entertaining. Not only is there some very good advice but a lot of comics appear here to. But I am after some advice myself and having just obtained my JD 2305 I would like to ask if I may, some questions.
1. My local Alberta dealer has suggested the tractor should have it's first service at 8 hours. This does not agree with what I have read here and in the manual. Is it perhaps as I suspect a further dealer rip off. Comments please. I have just gone over that figure now.
2. I have a lot of grass to cut with my 62 inch deck. I spend about 6 hours at a time cutting grass. That is with my little Sabre with it's 48 inch deck. I have noticed the rear transmission on the 2305 gets pretty hot after a while. Is this normal or am I looking at an early problem?
3. I am looking to make a fabric cab with steel tube framing. I am thinking of mounting some short attachment brackets on the FEL mounts, where they attach to the frame of the tractor. I know I will need longer bolts here as there is little left on the current ones. Are these bolts anything special? Can anyone see any problems with doing this?

1. He's not doing you any favors and making money. It's best to follow the JD Manual and let the engine break-in oil do it's job. Just grease everything and check fluid levels since he probably didn't do any prep on it before delivery.

2. Normal. It's fan cooled. Check the fan every now and then to make sure you didn't get a stick or something up in there and broke some blades off.

3. Don't know.

Best of luck with the 2305. It's a powerful and versatile machine. I love mine!!

I agree with jsb2b, follow the manual and keep everything greased.

If you run without your MMM your fan is vulnerable. Bro tek offers a transmission fan shield for the Kubota as it is vulnerable like the JD fan. If you can't find a provider, you can fabricate one to mount on your MMM lift.

Our 2305 has been used in a lot heavier grass and weeds than for which it was designed and everything has held up for two years; all tractors get pretty hot, but are designed to handle it.

Don't know anything about your last question; don't have FEL on mine.

Thanks guys,
I had a feeling the dealer was looking for some extra cash. More so as I had to call them out to re-adjust the deck as I was not able to get it to raise or lower to the correct height. I can't say I am impressed by the local dealers at all. As two different dealers can't be bother to do a pre-delivery check or at least do it correctly.
I will check on the fan, though there has been no rough work with the tractor yet. I will look up a guard and order one or make one myself. Thanks for the tip.

budgie9,

I am too old and stove up to do my own work anymore, but use to do all of the maintenance on them and saved a ton of money. You might check to see if you can do your own and not void your warranty as these things really are not hard to change fluids and such on.

Chances are if you have not run your machine without the MMM you won't have any damage to your fan, but you might want to pull your deck and make sure it was not damaged upon delivery since they don't seem to be too good at set up.

TripleR,
Thanks for the comments I do appreciate them. I am also getting a little stiff these days, but hope to do the servicing myself. I can't say I trust the guys to service the unit unless one is standing over them.
I have been servicing my Sabre 21hp since new and have recently given it a total strip down and rebuild, other than the engine that is. I had hoped to leave the snowblower on the Sabre for the winter work, using the 2305 for the rest of the work around the place.
I think I am going to need a snow blower shortly, as the Sabre one is getting pretty dented from the gravel on my long drive. If I can't patch a sheet on the inside of that to help, I will have to look at an after market blower for the 2305. The cost here in Alberta for a JD unit is stupid compared to Montana prices and even they are high.
I am still looking for an answer to question 3. if anyone is reading.

I am not sure about the bolts, but just look at the head and see what markings they have or post a pic of them. I would guess offhand they are probably a grade 5.

Budgie,

As to the bolts on your FEL mounts, I agree with vsteel as there are charts indicating the various grades on SAE as well as metric. We have a POS Westendorf FEL on our CX80 and have had to replace about half the bolts on it over the years with the most recent when the darned thing fell off the tractor. Some bolts in the frame attachment came out, so we removed one of the bolts on the other side, checked the dimensions and markings and got replacements from our local hardware store.

Here's a fabrication plan another forum member provided for a fan shield:
