JD 2210 850HRS POSSIBLE MAIN BEARING LET GO need to repair

Hi everyone. Was using the tractor removing snow the other night, and noticed when I put the throttle up I was getting some vibration and a different sound like a fluttering sound. My son told me he's been hearing some clacking sound for awhile
but I thought that was just a normal diesel engine sound. But the new sound is almost like an out of balance propeller and we can hear more pinging metal sounds. My son went to school for mechanic and he told me it could be a broken push rod and most definitely a wore out main bearing. He feels he's confident he can do the repair so I think I'll let him do it. I have the JD manual repair on cd to go by. Any of you ever change these bearings and are there any tips or tricks you can throw my way? He said he would have to remove the engine and drop the lower half or oil pan I guess to see what's in the oil. The motor has never had any work done to it until now. Bought it one yr old in 2006. It's a 2005. Any advice on to what we should do and how to do it and what to watch out for would be much appreciated. Also, how much time on average should it take to do this job? And since it's opened up, if there's anything else we should do, let me know. He did mention a kit I could buy I guess to replace some things. Don't remember what he said. Thank you in advance! And we got another 8-10" of snow coming on Wednesday.

Are you sure it isn't the driveshaft? They have a tendency to go bad if not greased occasionally.

Have you checked for a bad/leaking injector?
They can cause a miss and bad knocking if leaking fuel before the actual (normal) injection event.

I could believe a spun rod bearing, Not so much a main,bearing failure.

Bad /worn main bearings generally have a much deeper/lower frequency dull sound than a failed rod bearing .

A failed rod bearing can result in the piston actually contacting the head, which results in a much louder higher pitched LOUD knock.

I would start it and crack each of the injector lines 1 at a time and see if the knock goes away before tearing into the engine.

Loose rocker arm adjusting nut coming loose or a bent broken push rod also is a possibility.

Has the noise been present with Just the engine and no pto running? -


ps. I f bearings are worn enough to need replacing the engine would likely have low oil pressure and lots of metal in the pan/ oil filter. Also the engine would need to come completely out to have the crankshaft removed and turned.

Before removing the oil pan , it may be helpful to remove the oil filter and cut it apart to check for bearing material.

Edit : all the above assumes there are no pto implements being used ie Only the tractor engine running and sure that the noise/knock is in fact emanating from the engine

I would be looking for metal flakes in the oil before I condemn the main bearings.

A main bearing is a symptom to a greater problem that must be found.

Thanks everyone. This is all very good information. I may post a video describing the sound and you may be able to pin point it a little more.
It really sucks because I love using the tractor with the blower I just bought last yr and we're getting about 14" of snow today to tomorrow.

I agree with Kennyd and bigtiller, Sounds like a U joint went on the pto. The ROPs, seat and rear fender along with the floor pan and lower dash need to come off to get to it.

The 2210 and 2305 use the same shaft.
