JD 2155 hydraulic swing cylinder on the backhoe leaking out of the vent?

Are these swing cylinders easy to rebuild? The right side swing cylinder leaks when you swing the backhoe all the way to the left. Oil is coming out of the vent cap on the back cover of the cylinder. The cylinder is a bolt together style. My guess is that the internal cylinder seal is leaking. Anyone rebuild one of these?

The bolt together cylinder is very easy to disassemble. Once it is apart, be sure to look at inside bore of cylinder. These tend to develop rust inside bore due to moisture getting in through the vent you are seeing the leakage from. If rust is minor, you may be able to hone it out, but if really pitted, a new cylinder barrel may be needed. Not sure which model backhoe you have on your tractor, but some parts for those older backhoes are becoming hard to find. Seal kits should not be a problem, but barrel or rod might be hard to come by through Deere. A good hydraulic shop should be able to fabricate any parts you might need.

Thanks for the info. This tractor belongs to my farmer friend. I'll get the model off the backhoe today and look to see if the parts are still available. Maybe just pulling it apart to clean out the rust would help. A solution for this problem would be to replace those vents with hoses that went to a closed container that you could put some kerosene in. The fumes of the kerosene would keep the cylinders from rusting. This machine has been sitting for a bit. He just fired it up the other day and noticed that the cylinder was leaking when he swung the backhoe to the side.

The hoe is a model 10. I should be able to get the piston seal for that.

You were right about parts being scarce. I have not pulled it apart yet to inspect it. JD does not list the packing parts for the piston any longer. You can buy a new piston for $2059.00 LOL. I do know a place that does hydraulics and will speak with them if a new seal pack is needed. Hopefully in the near future we can tear this down to ee how bad the rust is.

It appears that seal kit PT15283 $89.49 is still available from JD. JD dealer in Taylor,TX shows to have kit in stock
