JD 2020 PTO seal replacement

New to the forum, and hoping someone can help me. I have a 69 John Deere 2020 with a 540 PTO in a two-stage clutch. I need to replace the rear seal on the PTO shaft. in the manual it says to place the control in the off position and remove the bearing Quill and assembly. it also states to be careful not to pull the shift collar from the front driveshaft, but it doesn’t specify how to do that. I read someplace online that you can put the shaft control lever in the on position, and it will prevent the shift collar from coming off the front drive shaft. Is that correct? If so, why does the manual specifically say to put it in the off position?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It's been over 35 yrs since I served as a JD dealer service manager BUT from viewing 2020 pto parts schematics I think pto control lever should be in "off position" before pulling rear pto shaft.
