JD 2020
Hello,

I am a new tractor owner and don't know anything about repairing them. I have a late 67' JD 2020 that has a leak in the front axle area. Is the most likely source the hydraulic pump or could it have something to do with the power steering. Below is a pic of the area in question. Oil or something is collecting around the washer and snap ring that go onto the end of the lever. Thoughts and ideas are much appreciated.

You need to remove the hood and check from the top to see where the leak s coming from.
Mybe a rotten hose or a steel pipe or just a loose clamp.

Ditto what DLTTrekkers stated. Leak is definitely not power steering related as PS related hyd's are directly under steering wheel. Possible leak at frt isfrt pump shaft seal or plastic frt pump seal drain back to trans shift cover line

Tx Jim Thanks for the reply. Are you referring to the hydraulic pump? Where is the front pump shaft seal?

Will do. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hydraulic pump I am sure. Looks like this in outline form (from jdparts at this link)
John Deere - Parts Catalog

I'd remove some metal covering to get at the front of the engine and clean up the oily parts. Good engine cleaners are available and some hot water to rinse off the grime works, or a good pressure washer helps too.

Once clean, use some shop towels strategically placed to see just where the oil is coming from.
Then get some good pics to show us, or be able to decipher yourself where the trouble oil comes from.

How long has this been happening, or is the 2020 new to you?

Thanks for the comments beenthere. Yeah I initially thought I had a fuel leak around the manual shut-off valve, but once I took the side grilles off it was so full of wet dirt and grime I couldn't tell what was coming from where. You can see in these pics how wet everything is. A lot of it is water, either from rain coming in or from the radiator overflow hose (it was resting in the front support frame channel)?

This is a new to me Tractor. I've only had it a couple of weeks.

Pump shaft seal that actually seals the oil is o-ring(key 5). Pump shaft must be removed from disassembled pump to R&R o-ring.

I agree with beenthere. A good cleaning is the first thing to do. Steel line at upper right in picture is twisted real bad too.

Dissembled completely? Or, can I just remove the cover and remove the shaft from there? I guess I need to invest in a service manual.
