Hi everyone,

I just aquired my first real tractor, a JD 2010 with the gas motor. Before I haul it all the way out to my hunting property, I wanted to do some fluid changes, etc, in the comfort of my own driveway.

What I can't seem to find is what kind of oil do these things use and how much?

I did an hour of searching and I either can't find the info, or it's not clear on if the recommendation is for a gas or diesel engine.

My guess is that a 10W-40 would be fine, but I don't want to just guess. As far as how much oil, I couldn't even guess.

Many thanks.

Maybe a call to a John Deere dealer's parts department may solve the problem.

10-30 or 10-40 should work, and likely 4-6 quarts will cover it. You will know more when you drain the oil.. and an extra quart on hand wouldn't hurt a thing. ;)

Remember that it has an oil bath air cleaner, so should change that oil as well.
Also engine oil filter.

I'd recommend you buy an operators manual so you have good information on the "new" tractor purchase.
Good time to have a discussion with your Deere dealer as well.

What are the plans for using the tractor at camp?

No offense or insult intended but darn it all . Is it too late to get rid of the 2010 ? The only two tractors hated more than a gas 2010 is a diesel 1010 and a diesel 2010. I wish you would have consulted here first before purchasing so we could have warned you . Making payments on a new 5055E will cost less over the next 10 years than the 2010. At the end of 10 years the 5055E will still be worth something .
The nice folks at 1-800-522-7448 have operator's and service manuals on CD and hard copy. The parts book is free on the JD web site.

2010 gasoline powered tractors aren't that bad. BTW No offense or insult intended but darn it all I guess you're wife must have given you the OK to buy a new tractor since you're suggesting for someone else to buy a NEW TRACTOR. :dance1:

By chance you must not have read the threads on the problems of the new JD "E" series tractors as they aren't all exactly trouble free!!!!
Happy hunting,Jim

Yes, Grouse should most thankful that he avoided a diesel 1010 or diesel 2010. Yes the 2010 gasser may do the job but I wish we could have assisted before the purchase .
I would take a Massey 265 long before a 2010.

Obviously, a new tractor wasn't an option or I wouldn't be posting a question about one built in 1965. I'm not farming 400 acres, I'm planting food plots on 80 acres of recrational land. It doesn't matter what, in theory, would have been better. It only matters what was available since I've been looking an I havent' seen a Massey or any other brand that was worth a crapping thing.

I have had about 10 acres bulldozed out of solid woods and now I have 10 acres of rock that needs to be picked. About 50-60 bucketloads per acre. So compared to the ATV trailer I was using, the 2010 is a significant upgrade. I've already used it and I can verify it's a VAST improvement.

Thanks for the advice, went out and got oil and actually found a filter as well.
