On display at the New York Farm Show… by the Finger Lakes Two-Cylinder Club

“These pistons, rods, and crankshaft are out of a 1938 John Deere ‘G’. The Model ‘G’ has a huge 6.125” bore and a 7” stroke which accounts for its tremendous lugging ability. It is rated 31.4 hp on the belt. Engine displacement is 412.5 cid at a maximum of 975 rpm’s.”

Re: JD Model \'G\'

Ahhhh! That brings back vivid memories of when I was 14 and working on a neighbors farm, running a JD model G on a baler, doing custom baling for the farmer all summer. Real trick in timing was to encounter a big wad of windrowed hay ready to choke the baler, and have to quick pull the hand clutch, shift out of gear, and pop the hand clutch back in before the baler on the PTO came to a stop. Cause if it stopped, it meant pulling that big wad of hay out of that baler practically one hay stem at a time.
Also, starting up the tractor, baler, PTO, and loaded hay wagon really lugged that two banger down, but it would recover. Great memories around that old model G.

Boy, and I thought the bore is big on my 429. Guess it just won't cut it now. Hay, do you think you could out 8 of THOSE together? Now, THAT would be a motor./w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

In Baltimore Harbor they have a WWII submarine tied up. USS Torsk. She was powered by 2 diesels. Big suckers. Seems like 8 or 12 cylinders. They have a cylinder setting there to show her size, roughly that of a 1 gl paint can. An in-line. She wouldn't turn very fast, but lord the torque out of that thing.

Was that at the NYS Two Cylinder Expo? If so did you get a chance to see the Gold Leaf JD D. That was a great piece of history.

{see attached}

Hi Robert,

No this was taken at the NY Farm Show... unfortunately I was running late for an appointment and had to leave this building to find another... I forgot to come back and see the rest... /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

However in this antique room, I did meet this man in his ~ 70's that restored his Grandfather's 1941 Farmall in memory of his Grandfather... as he stood next to the Farmall and his Grandfather's picture... I was very moved... very touching... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: JD 1938 Model \'G\'-Huge Pistons...!

There was a old farmer who had a Fordson Super Major that he would go to the local tractor pulls and usually place 1st or 2nd, he died last year and now his son runs the Fordson at the pulls, doesn't do as well but with more experience he should. I do love to visit with the old timers and other vintage collectors because everybody has a different story about where or how they got their tractor. Have fun and talk to you later.

Yeah... I know what you mean... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

This man was by himself, and I walked up and admired his work and was reading the writeup about his Grandfather and life... the man looked at me somewhat sad and I told him "Sir, you did a beautiful job with your Grandpa's machine... he certainly would be proud of you..."

The man sounded like he was starting to break up and asked me..."You really think my Grampa would be proud...?"

As I hugged this man, I said," Yes Sir, I know he is..."

Re: JD 1938 Model \'G\'-Huge Pistons...!

I have found a lot of old farmers when they first switched from horses to tractors love their new tractors like a son. It is sad but I see more and more old timers pass away everyday, with them you lose all their stories and experiences with their machines that they enjoy telling so much. Some of the greatest people I know I met at tractor shows and you know you have at least one thing in common with them.

Some of the best history stories I found out were at farm equipment auctions, and I could set there for hours on end w/a coffee and listen.
