Good morning.

Looking to purchase a mower with a bigger cutting width.

Need some opinions or reviews on the John Deere D170 with the 54" deck.

Any recommendations for a different brand/model?

Thanks!

Welcome to tractorbynet

I'm sure folks on this site will be very happy to give you recommendations for a mower.

Can you give us a little more info of your needs ?

How much area are you mowing ?

Do you have any steep hills or slopes ?
Or do you have any area in which traction might be an issue ?

Are you planning on towing anything with your machine, if so what are you planning on towing ?

thank you

Thanks for responding.

Can you give us a little more info of your needs ? sure

How much area are you mowing ? 1/2 (being field grass) to 1 (the rest lawn) acre

Do you have any steep hills or slopes ? no
Or do you have any area in which traction might be an issue ? no

Are you planning on towing anything with your machine, if so what are you planning on towing ? possibly a cart that can tote up to 400 pounds

thanks again for responding

Still would like to know if anyone out there has any reviews on the JD 170 with the 54" cutting deck...

thanks!

I would recommend you consider an x320 with 54" deck for better longevity. It is more money but it is a better value than a D170 which can develop transmission problems within 200 hours. Some people are lucky and get more use out of their 100 series lawn tractors, a lot of us have had transmission failures though. The little reverse pedal on the 100 series is also difficult to use imo, the x310 and up have a two pedal system that works much better.

What I see time and time again is people buy the $2,500 mower thinking to save money and should have spent $4,000+ and get one that lasts. The initial $2500 spent would have been a good percentage of the cost of the right mower.
