JD 1217 haybine gearbox oil

I've just gotten and rebuilt a 1217 JD mower/conditioner. It's running great, but I haven't hunted up a used manual yet. Anyone have info on checking gearbox oil levels, and type of gear oil recommended? I'd like to get that checked while in the mode and before 1st cutting.

All implement gearboxes Im familiar w/have fill, drain and check points. The full point is somewhere between fill & drain on the side of the box. All of my implements use sq head plugs so that might be a help in locating it. Instructions for my implements indicate the gearbox should be filled to the bottom of the full point. So once you locate the plug and remove it some oil should exit. That said theres no substitute for an owner manual...itll give location and oil type and you wont have to guess.
