My 1050 seems to have a chirp or maybe a squeel coming from from the turbo area at mid to high rpms. It seems to be getting worse. Where do I start?

Sounds like a bearing in the turbo getting ready to seize. Make sure there is no air leaks/exhaust smoke from a loose or cracked manifold or loose clamp some were. Had a cracked exhaust manifold on a 6BTA cummins that had a intermittent, shear squeel/ old steam engine whistle sound with varying RPMs. Thought it was the turbo at first, till I pulled a panel off the side of the timberjack and seen soot trail from the crack. Have had whistles, extreme black smoke and poor engine performance and strange noises from loose clamps on turbo-ed engines.

Thanks. I will check for leaks first. Is there a way to check the turbo bearing? I imagine it has to come out to be checked. I assume there is one on each side of the turbo?

Pull either hose or tube off the turbo and see if you can turn the impeller by hand and see if there is any movement in it or if it is hard to turn. I would not try and replace the bearings in it myself they turn at Very high speeds and one little screw up and the turbo is toast and if the pieces go into the engine??? I have seen that happen more times than I care to count too.

The turbo impeller should turn freely, easy and smooth with one finger. An impeller that does not turn as such, is a problem. Dirthog is right, if it is a bad turbo, just replace with a new one. I would not try too rebuild the turbo neither. A turbo may be a few hundred bucks, but a new engine is a few thousand bucks if turbo pieces get sucked in and digested.

It seems to have more radial play then it should by feel. The axial play is minimal. I can easily turn it, but it stops soon after removing my fingers. JD wants $980 for a new turbo. Bearings are $70. I am going to remove and disassemble to see what it what, and what is bad now. If the shaft is worn, no sense trying to save it. If the impellers show wear, same deal. If it is just the bearings, they are held in from my understanding with c clips. I need to check the oil supply also. Any other suggestions? What is the general cause of this? I always idle down for a minute after removing load.

Find a local injection pump shop and get a quote from them on a rebuild/replacement. I wouldn't disassemble it before talking to them; they might not want to recieve it as a box of parts. Causes of bearing play are normal wear and tear, less than optimum oil flow, poor oil quality. It's not like a 1050 is a new tractor.

Good call. But where would I find one of those shops? Not sure what to look under in yellow pages. Thanks for the help!

Ask any good diesel mechanic. Maybe even your favorite tractor dealer. They should know where the best shop is.
