I'm having issues with my hydraulics. When I change my hydraulic/transmission fluid and filters, the hydraulics work great for about 2 hrs. Then the hydraulics diminish and become jumpy. I used the tractor supply hydraulic/transmission fluid and a Fram PH8A filter. When I check the fluid it has an light greenish color to it. What is causing this to happen? I put a tarp over the tractor thinking that water was creeping in, but it still happens. I've done this at least 3 times but it continues to happen. I've done everything that I can think of to fix it, but it continues to happen.

Did you clean the hydraulic screen? Is the spin on filter getting plugged up,and did a new filter fix it for awhile?

Every time that I change the spin on filter and change the fluid everything works great for about 2 hrs. of run-time, after that they diminish and become slow and jumpy. I noticed a whining sound coming from under the seat and thought that maybe the screen filter was clogged and reducing the pressure. So, today I drained the fluid and removed/inspected the screen filter. The filter had slight debris but nothing alarming. I did not change out the spin on filter since it only has approx. 2 hrs. of run-time on it. The fluid had some slight light and dark colors intermixed within the fluid. I cleaned the screen filter and strained the fluid and put it back in. Same thing happens, slow and jumpy. This makes me believe that the spin-on filter is clogged, but how could it become clogged within only 2 hrs. of run-time? HELP PLEASE!!!!!!! I'm close to pushing it off the edge!

Make sure you are getting the right filter. Might try one from JD and see if that helps.

Have you used that fram filter on your tractor before?

The reason I ask is because before I found this site I used to think that if a filter fit then it was good. Come to find out they have different bypass pressures and whatnot and if they're not designed for, or have the same specs as what what you use them on then there might be trouble.

How much is a Deere filter?

I may be completely off but just throwing it out there.

Besides the filter issue, you might also want to check on your choice of hydraulic fluid. Not sure about your JD, but on my Kubota the dirctions are emphatic, and field reports confirm, that if you want it to run right you dig deep in your pocket and buy the exact, specific fluid that is specified in the manual - - or else - -period. The or else loosely translated: Or it won't run right.

Talked to a mechanic at P & K in Norman today. He said that I have residual water left in the transmission from the past. He said to put in about 4 gallons of diesel in the transmission and slosh it around and replace the filters. I'm going to try that this week and I'll reply back.

I'd be somewhat reluctant to flush the system for water removal before at least checking for water (if you have not already):

Does your hydraulic fluid look milky? - a sign of water beyond the oil's saturation point.

If not, it may still contain water, but a lesser amount. Partially remove a drain plug and catch the first oil to come out, only need less than a thimble full. Heat a pan so that water just starts to dance or boil off - - try not to go a lot hotter. Put several drops of the hydraulic oil on the pan. If it spatters and sizzles, there's water in it . . . if it spreads out "quietly", there's no water to speak of.

If you are using some mixture to flush that includes 70% rubbing alcohol (isopropyl), it is 30% water. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me to add water to try and get it out. Instead, use 99% or better isopropyl alcohol, often available at the pharmacy counter (not on the shelves as the druggies use it to process hash oil).

Well, I drained the hydraulic fluid, a little milky. I poured approx. 3 gallons of diesel into the case and let it sit over night. I dumped out the diesel and put in about 2 gal. of hydraulic fluid and drained it. It appeared pretty clean. I poured in 6.8 gallons of hydraulic fluid and I got zero response from the hydraulics!!!!!!!!!!!! Now its not working at all!! What to do?

Hydraulics needed to be bled. Loosened the pressure tube and they work like a champ now. Now, I'll have to wait and see if they last.
