JD 2940
As an offshoot to my earlier thread. I am now comparing these 2 tractors. I do not know yet whether the 1020 is gas or diesel. The 2040 is.

The 1020 appears to be in excellent shape, from appearances. A 1970 model with a canopy, rops, back blade and JD loader.

The 2040 is alright appearance-wise. A little rougher etc. Both apparently run well.

Prices:

1020 Asking $11,500
2040 Asking $8,500

I'm thinking about trying to get into the 1020 for $9,00 and see what happens. Another point to consider is that the 2040 is a long ways away. About a days drive. 1020 is 250 miles is all.

School me on the differences here. What to look for. What to avoid. Causes for concern?

My understanding is that 1020 parts are hard to find, radiators of for example. Someone else may know better.

Wow that is a big question with no way to know what you need to do. Here is the links for tractordata.com

One is a sixties tractor with 33 hp and the other is a 80's tractor with 70 hp. I would go for the 2040 but how are you going to use it? The 1020 is collectible, the 2040 is a good work horse. Other than they both are for sale near you they have really nothing similar between the two. I really don't know any model specific problems either had. I would prefer the diesel engine. Hope this helps!!

1020 is a great tractor we have one. I would think you could find a real nice 1020 with a loader for 8500 or less. 2030 was 70 hp but 2040 should be about 40 couple. We have no trouble getting parts for our 1020 as of yet,but it really has'nt needed alot since 1975

The American market 1020 and the 2040 are similar in size and both are about 40 ptohp. I really like the 20 series and currently have an 820 in good shape, I have also had a 3020 and 4020, all were good tractors imo. I suspect if you can buy it right the 1020 is what I would recommend if it is in better condition. No issues with this model that I can recall. If the condition of the two is the same I think it would be a close call, things such as extra hydraulics and tires can make one more desireable.
