I have an older (1984) JCB TLB that I bought for around the property here. Needs a lot of tinkering, but that's fine...it's what I do.
First thing that is of a concern is the shuttle shifter. It hesitates from forward to reverse. I never move the reverser while in motion; I stop and go because I know it's not good for the shuttle. The previous owner had it rebuilt a couple years ago so he claims. The shuttle/reverser lever has no detent spring or neutral spot in it, therefore you have to search for it. I always pull the main trans. box out of gear to park or get out to do something.
The shuttle is completely full of fluid,(actually overfull,) although I know he just dumped 10W hydraulic fluid in it when I bought it; I watched him do it. Research shows me it takes 10W motor oil in the shuttle in that particular model. I'm wondering if I should try and drain it out and fill it with the right oil, maybe even some Lucas to see if it restores itself before I pull the shuttle out and have it looked at/rebuilt? Worth a shot I guess. It may last forever this way, but it makes me nervous that one day I'll be using it and it'll calve on me in the middle of something.
Second problem is the swing function is not working. There's a rack/pinion setup on this one, and I see when I move the swing lever either way, the main pin turns in the bore, but the boom doesn't. Must be something broken or stripped in that "T" setup on the tower?
Any JCB men out there? I'd appreciate the input, THANKS and Merry Christmas!
