anyone one use this product around heat? i have a break in my "smoker". don't have a welder available, so i just need to repair a seam....most of the heat will be in the fire box, however, i don't want to lose the heat and smoke(less than 500 degrees)...do most of the smoking under 300 degrees....

thanks,

I put JB weld in some very large dings that were in a motorcycle cylinder head. The dings were caused when a piston self destructed. I ran it with the JB weld for about 4 years with out any problem and it gets hot in a 500 cc two stroke engine.

I recommend finding some stove putty. Used for sealing wood stoves and such. I think Lowes has it, not real sure on that though. Seals good and handles heat real well, not a lot of strength but works well for what it is, a sealer.

On the subject of JB weld... It is good stuff and I like it. A cousin borrowed my tractor and was using the loader to move some junk pickups around... well one broke loose and swung in and a piece of steel poked in and broke the front mounted crank driven pump totally loose from it's mounting base. Pump was intact just broken loose from the mounting base.

Well considering a new one is over 600.00 I cleaned it up good with acetone and JB welded it. that was about 3 months ago and it is still working great.

I also know people that have used it on gas tanks and cracked water jackets with good success.

btw I have since welded up a 3/8" plate guard around the pump to prevent a re-occurance...

On my last tractor I had a 3/16 hole in the exhaust manifold casting that I patched using some JB Weld. I wire-brushed the hole and used the flat of a screwdriver to smooth some in place. I really didn't think it would hold for long since the manifold got so hot but it was still in place the day that I sold the tractor 2 years later. Now I always have JB Weld lying around just in case.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is JB weld?

Why its just the greatest thing since sliced bread and Marvel Myster Oil! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Its better than duct tape, but only because its harder! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif It's the answer to "OH GREAT, WHAT AM I GOING TO DO NOW?!" /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

From the JB Weld Web Page:

"Cold weld virtually any combination of iron, steel, copper, aluminum, brass, bronze, porcelain, ceramic, marble, glass, plastic, concrete, fiberglass, wood, fabric, paper ... just about any porous and non-porous material! "

I must admit, it really does work pretty well.

Gosh, based on the web page, you'd think there was no reason to ever actually weld something. Just smear on some of this stuff and get a cleaner, faster, safer weld every time!

So what's the reality? The strength numbers on the web page imply that I could make a Back Hoe just by glueing the parts together with JB-Weld.

I am less than excited to admit I have gotten pretty clever with JB Weld just fixing my "Fixes" /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I have created enough of these "opportunities" for myself that I can say with some confidence it is great stuff.
