Massey Ferguson MF 250
Now that I have calmed down, figured I would post and see if someone can point me towards a solution before another weekend goes by without the FEL working.:muttering:

I have been trying to get the MF 250 with a 232 FEL fully operational again after the transmission housing was busted, and the FEL belly mount plate and arms twisted. It's been going on for years, and got within spitting distance yet again tonight, and something else broke. After all new hoses, I had a bucket cylinder pouring. One $130 seal kit(w/$30 shipping charge) and some careful cleaning, I was reassembled the cylinder tonight, and pinned it on the tractor. The final step before hooking up the shiny new hoses was turning in the wire lock for the gland, and since I had carefully pre-oiled everything with a tiny brush and hydraulic fluid, I could turn the gland with just an adjustable wrench instead of the 36" steel pipe wrench it took to break the gland loose to disassemble.

So I inserted the wire lock in the gland cap, made sure it grabbed the indention for the hook, had my son hold it steady, and started turning it in. To me, it felt like the right amount resistance as the wire turned in, bending along the groove......and then a faint "snap"...:censored:. Reversed the gland...and the wire did not move. :fiery: :banghead:. Got a pair of pliers and had my son pull while I reversed the "almost a 1/2 turn" we made before the snap...and the wire came free, with the hook end broken off. :pullinghair: :hissyfit:

Now that my extensive vocabulary of expletives is fully exhausted, I have to find a replacement lock wire. The nearest Massey dealer is over an hour away, and he had to order the seal kit (this 232 has German cylinders). An on-line search for the part number was zero results. Do I have other options? Would a local hydraulic cylinder repair shop stock something like this, maybe? Or are they only going to have construction equipment stuff?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if you have any independent tractor repair shops in your area. We do and the are very good and very reasonable. In small town rural America the guys rely on their reputation and they know if they don't do a good job and they are not reasonable, they aren't going to make it. That being said, they usually have a line on all kind of parts, rebuilt parts, rebuild kits and after market parts. I have an old loader on an allis Chalmers tractor. They have rebuilt all the cylinders on it for about 105 dollars a piece parts and labor. I have more faith in the independent tractor repair shop than I do the dealers. The independent tractor repair shop knows he has to stand behind their work, or they won't stay in business very long. A dealer just takes the approach of "there is a sucker born every minute" and the hide behind a corporate conglomerate and won't stand behind their work.

To my knowledge all 232 cylinders were made by Cross Hydraulics unless someone swapped them. Cross is located in Kansas - maybe they can help?

Cross hydraulic cylinders have historically pretty goof and a lot of tractor supply stores, orschelns, and farm and home stores carry theit product. Like anything else they wear out start leaking and need a seal kit put I'm them. Cross is basically in my backyard and a lot of guys are using their products. Here are a couple phone numbers:

Got any pix?
Actually I do, plus the pic with the name on the cylinder, PACOMA. Let me see what I can do about something to host the pics.

You can attach the pictures directly here, no external hosting needed.

Okay, here goes a picture upload of the cylinder, sort of a test, because I did get the problem resolved.

The wife and I up and decided to drive to Oxford Alabama to the sole MF dealer with a replacement gland wire, who was kind enough to leave it for me on a bench in front of his shop.

A little over 500 miles for a $20 part, but the loader works again.
