After 30 years of use its time to replace the clutch on my G174.
Anyone out there with any experience on this I would welcome their input and advice.

Thanks

I have a TX1500F 4 wheel drive G-174. I changed the clutch about 10 years ago. The tractor came apart just like the big ones. The was no surprises and I used just common tools, jacks and wooden blocks. I do not remember anything out of the ordinary.

Bit late to react.......but currently working on a clutch to and waiting for a new kit to come in.
advice.....my first clutch job to and on a tractor i guess its easy to work on.
take everything of that its keeping the tractor from splitting in half, if your memory sucks then take pictures.
take a good look before you take anything apart, you can Always miss a bolt and then damage parts if you know what i mean.
Bolts stuck.....use heat and not force.
i.m doing a kubota right now but its allthe same.....gastank, gaslines, electra wires, pedals and links, 2 hydrolic lines, and in my case 4wd a shaft had to come off before i could reach the clutch.
like suntreemcanic said....wood and jacks, to keep both halfs standing up.
it took me 2 hours to take everything off, my wife helped with pushing the rear away and kicking the wood with it, and i guess i can put it back in 2 or 3 hours.
this is a job ( when its your first clutch) that you just have to start doing and it wil suprise you how easy these tractors come apart.
now on to the clutch, my plates stil have some left end the only wear i see are on the fingers and throwout bearing, but not going to take any chance and replace the whole set.
Look on the net and YouTube for tips and tricks like centering the pressure plate and the clutch disk......
all i can say, just do it and good luck.....i will let you know how my clutch worked out after recieving.

Do not forget to change pilot bushing. The bushing can be removed by using a slice of bread and pushing as much as possible into the hole in the bushing. Use a round steel shaft a bit smaller than the bushing hole and drive the bread in farther, push more bread in, drive that in also, keep up this process pretty soon the bushing wii start coming out. It works!

Thanks for all the input! I like the bread trick.
I feel pretty confident on the general wrenching. Many years ago in my youth I worked for a truck repair shop and we did a lot of clutches But you didn't have to split the truck in half to get at the clutch.
Another question is in the WSM it states " Evenly coat the splines of the input shaft with a film of molybdenum disulfide lubricant ( eq MOLYCOTE G). Slide it back and forth approximately ten times to lubricate the entire part before reassembly."
It also states to coat all rotating parts with a thin film of grease.
Does any of this make sense?
If my memory is correct we were always told to keep any grease away from the clutch. I can still hear the boss yelling at us to keep our greasy hand off the clutch plate!

Yes sparingly. Also, resist temptation to pull it all together with bolts. Keep the halves stable and level, watch that the elevation and distances of the flanges are uniform. Keep a rocking and pushing and turning on the flywheel all at the same time. About the time you are ready to give up, you will feel it go where it needs to be. Keep working it in to the dowels, you can start sucking it up with bolts evenly all the way around then. Good luck!

I can report that the replacement was a success. Hardest part was getting the steering wheel off. I hand a puller on it but it would not budge. Tried every penetrating oil I could get a hold of. After soaking it for a week I was reluctant to take the torch to it. I tried using a heat gun and tapping the hub from below, after about 10 minutes it finally came loose.
Didn't get to use the bread method on the pilot bearing, the lock washers on the flywheel bolts overlapped the ouster race. So I had to pull the flywheel.
Thank for all the advice!

Why did you have to remove the steering wheel?

You need to get the dash off so you can remove the fuel tank and bracket to get at the bell housing bolts and to remove the hydro lines....
I guess that's one more reason why they are called 'compact tractors'.
